RACIST MAN ATTACKED ‘GOOD SAMARITAN’ WHO CAME TO AID OF CWMBRAN CABBIE

A man racially abused a taxi driver before he “knocked out a brave Good Samaritan” who came to help him dur- ing an alcohol-fuelled attack. Ashley Doughty, 23, punched Clinton Cummings-Brown and he was kicked whilst on the ground by an unidentified woman. The pair fled the scene laugh- ing after the brutal attack near Cwmbran railway station at around 1am in the morning. The cabbie was subjected to a tirade of foul-mouthed racist abuse and shouted at to “go back to your own country”, after the parties were involved in a con- frontation which started in the taxi rank at the station. Cardiff Crown Court was told that Doughty was with his girlfriend and another man and a woman who were highly intoxicated and began arguing with Mr Abbas.

One of the females had vomited in the vehicle and Mr Abbas was not pre- pared to take them any fur- ther. The prosecu- tor, Mr Pinnell, said that

whilst Doughty was abusing the taxi driver, Mr Cummings-Brown, who was waiting to go in the cab behind, came to his assistance. Mr Pinnell said: “Mr Cummings-Brown has experienced racist abuse himself and stands up for people who are being abused and he did on this occa- sion. He went to remonstrate with the individual involved.

“Mr Cummings-Brown was punched and he fell back and his head struck the ground. He was either knocked out cold or senseless for about 15 seconds. There had been two separate punches.” Judge Nicole Jones commended Mr Cummings-Brown for his bravery in coming forward to the aid of Gulam Abbas. Doughty, from Pontypool, admitted causing actual bodily harm and a racially aggravated public order offence on July 27, 2019. He was jailed for nine months, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and pay a £149 surcharge. He must complete a 20-day rehabilita- tion activity requirement. He was also orered to pay Mr Cummings-Brown £1,000 in compensation and to com- pensate Mr Abbas £250.

DRUNK WHITLEY BAY THUG THREW BIN AT TAXI IN BOOZE-FUELLED RAGE OVER FARE

A drunk threw a bin at a taxi and smashed its wing mirrors during a booze-fuelled rage when he was asked to pay the fare upfront. Jordon Woods and a pal had got into the Blueline cab in Longbenton and were in the process of being driven to North Shields when the driver realised that he'd picked up the wrong people. A court heard that the cabbie’s head office told him to get the fare from the men before continuing the journey and when asked for the money Woods sug- gested the driver pull over at a petrol station. But instead of paying, the 22-year-old bought booze and on returning to the car both males refused to pay the fare. After a short time, they got out of the vehicle and the defendant picked up a green bin and threw it over the bonnet

of the taxi. The cabbie panicked at that point and tried to reverse away. The defendant then flew into a rage and struck the passenger side mirror twice, causing it to fall off. Marc Atkins, prosecuting at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court said that

the taxi driver had been left shaken and was “concerned about the damage to his vehicle as well his safety” because he thought Woods was “capable of further damage or possible assault”. Now, the thug from Whitley Bay, has been given a 12-month com- munity order and ordered to pay com- pensation after he pleaded guilty to the seventh criminal damage offence of his lengthy criminal career. Kash Khan, defending, said Woods hadn’t committed a criminal damage offence since 2018 and was apologetic for his drunken behaviour. As well as the community order, Woods, who is already on a tagged curfew for breaching his post sentence supervision after his last stint behind bars, was ordered to pay £300 com- pensation.
