TAXI DRIVER PARKED DANGEROUSLY ON ZIGZAG LINES IN POOLE
A taxi driver has received a fixed penalty for “thought- less, dangerous parking” in Broad- stone, Poole. The Bournemouth Echo reports that officers from the Dorset Police No Excuse team spot- ted the yellow Skoda on the pavement on zigzag lines during a recent patrol. The vehicle was in Lower Blandford Road and was blocking the view of a pedestrian crossing. “What do we need to say to drivers about thoughtless, dan- gerous parking, other than No Excuse?” said a police spokesman. “Dangerous parking = fixed penalty.”
PHV DRIVER FINED FOR WORKING WITHOUT LICENCE IN CAMBS
A man has been prosecuted for continuing to work, despite losing his private hire licence for assaulting a cyclist. Cambridge Independent reports that South Cambridgeshire District Council took action against Raminul Islam, 34, from London, who admitted driving a PHV without holding the required licence and having invalid insurance. Mr Islam appeared before Cambridge Magistrates on 20 October, and initially denied the charges. However, after the court outlined to him that his prospects of success were non- existent and advised him to seek legal advice, he pleaded guilty. The offence came to light when the council’s licensing team was contacted by a private hire operator to tell them about a complaint about Mr Islam received from a customer in November 2019. The council then found that Islam’s private hire driver licence was revoked in June 2019 after he received a police caution for assaulting a cyclist. His appeal was refused, he continued to drive a PHV but didn’t notify his operator that he no longer had a licence. When Islam was called to the council’s offices in January this year for an interview under caution, he claimed he was not aware that he could not continue to drive. He was fined £100, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £32 and £200 costs. In addition, his regular driving licence was endorsed with six penalty points.
DECEMBER 2020 87 PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER CAUGHT PLYING FOR HIRE IN MILTON KEYNES
A private hire driver has been successfully prosecuted at MK Magistrates Court for illegally plying for hire following an enforcement operation conducted by Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire Councils in October 2019. Rofiqul Islam from Luton accepted a £20 journey from Stony Stratford to Newport Pagnell in October 2019 which had not been pre-booked. At the time Mr Islam’s vehicle was only insured for pre-booked journeys with operator Skyline. Mr Islam pleaded not guilty but following trial was found guilty of plying for hire and driving without valid motor insurance. He was fined: £60 for plying for hire, £50 for no insurance and given six points on his DVLA licence. He was also ordered to pay costs of £300 with a victim surcharge of £30. Mr Islam is licensed by Buckinghamshire Council who will now review his licence as a result of this conviction. Cllr Mick Legg, Chair of MKC’s Regulatory (Taxi) Committee said: “For £20 this driver took the risk of breaking the law which has subsequently cost him £440 and put six points on his DVLA licence - which will also increase the cost of his vehicle insurance.”
