In this, our 21st year of existence, the National Private Hire Association wishes to celebrate our coming of age in grand style with the entire industry. Many of you have been members over the years: some long-standing and continuous, some dipping in and out, some joining when the proverbial hits the fan. Existing members will have taken advantage of the many benefits of NPHA membership at some point or other. Well, following some 18 months of preparation and i-dotting and t-crossing, we can now offer the headlining benefit to top them all: NPHA Licence Protection. So exactly what does this mean? What will be protected? Your livelihood, is what. We have noticed that over recent years, fewer and fewer licence holders have found themselves in a position to protect themselves in the event of either having been wrongly prosecuted for some misdemeanour, or having had a raft of unrea- sonable conditions imposed on their licence(s). But they couldn’t do this – and the reason is sim- ple: dosh. Or rather, lack of it. Over the years, the cost of legal proceedings has crept up along with everything else, to the extent that lodging fees, court appearance fees and other legal costs were beyond the means of the majority of licence holders. No longer! As a member of the NPHA you would be covered for such expenses and disburse- ments, thereby enabling you to retain your licence and your livelihood. Obviously there are exclu- sions and provisos: the main factor is whether your case stands a good chance of being won. That’s down to us to help you accurately assess your risks and chances in consultation with the insurers; and let’s face it, the Association has a healthy track record in that regard.
Further, we are working in tandem with the most taxi law-clued up solicitor(s) and barristers in the land, whose legal opinions and guidance will further strengthen your position if you’re onto a winner. You know what we’ve always said about legals: if you were caught illegally plying for hire, hav- ing picked up the Mayor’s daughter and hared down the High Street at 65 miles per hour, don’t even pick up the phone. We have never repre- sented the unrepresentable, and we certainly would not get involved in defending the unwinnable. But if your licence renewal is coming up, and you face some of those wonderful conditions like taking seats out of MPVs, or wearing green top hats on a Tuesday, or having been suspend- ed because all five valve caps don’t match on your tyres... you know the kinds of things we’re talking about, as we get calls and emails about them almost daily... then provided that these conditions were not pre-existing, if you have NPHA Licence Protection as a member you will now be in a position to challenge these situa- tions through the courts, or have representation at Committee or PACE interview. And the cost of this benefit, which is now built into the overall NPHA membership, represents a matter of a few pence per week – less than 50 pence, actually. We’ve attached the membership fees [below]: the operator fee now offers licence protection for the holder of the operator licence. If individual drivers on the operator member’s circuit want their own licence protection, that is available as well. As for local associations, we’ve lowered the affiliation fee from £150 to £100 for the group; then drivers can pay for indi- vidual membership if they wish to have NPHA
