So in all your years of driving, who is the most famous person you’ve had in the back of your car? Well in China the story of the Chinese Premier,
Xi Jinping, went viral before it turned out to be a hoax. And according to a study by the UK’s
airporttransfers.co.uk the rudest taxi drivers turn out to be the Parisians. Now there’s a surprise! Elsewhere there are a couple of gruesome stories from around the globe, which culminated in one taxi driver and one passenger losing their lives. But we lead with an heroic mother in NYC. from USA MOTHER SAVES BABY AFTER TAXI
SLAMS INTO THEM A mother managed to pull her baby daughter out from under a taxi after they were both struck by the vehicle in an accident captured on video. Alondra Gervacio, 17, and eight-month-old Perla were on their way to school for the teenager’s final exam when the car driver reportedly had a heart attack and lost consciousness - and the car mounted the pavement. CCTV footage showed the pair being hit by the taxi, which then smashed into the front of a shop in the Bronx, New York.
The baby was knocked out of her buggy and ended up underneath the vehicle. Ms Gerva- cio immediately rushed to the car and managed to pull her free. She said she felt no pain after the car slammed into her, and could think only of her child. Both mother and daugh-
Alondra Gervacio and 8 month old Perla
ter suffered only minor injuries but the driver was
pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Ms Gervacio said: “If I didn’t pull myself and her a little bit back it would have crashed into us and the store.” She believes she and her baby are lucky to be alive and she cannot bear to watch the footage. “I was putting her in the stroller and when I lifted my head up I saw the car coming. I’m like ‘Oh my God.’ I tried to push her on the side but I could- n’t,” the young mother said. “She fell out of the stroller. She was below the car.” The student at Jane Adams High School and little Perla were taken to Lin- coln Hospital. The teenager has pain on her left side. Speaking about her baby’s condition, she told WABC: “They took X-rays all over and of her head. But she’s all OK. She just has scratches on her head and on her hand. And that’s it.” Dr Rachel Rosansky, who works at Montefiore Hospital, was near the scene at the time of the accident. She said the driver was slumped over the wheel well before the crash and she rushed over to help. “We felt the impact,” she said. “I couldn’t really find a pulse, but he was still breathing a little bit.” George Martinez, the cab firm’s owner, said: “He was a nice responsible driver, never do anything, always responsible.”

WANT AN EIFFEL? YOU MIGHT JUST GET AN EARFUL...
If you are planning to take a cab to the Eiffel Tower or Colosseum, you had better have a thick skin. Driving in Paris and Rome is bad enough - but taxi drivers in the two cap- itals have been rated the rudest by British tourists. Those in the Ibiza resort of San Antonio, Dubai and Magaluf are also not well known for minding their manners. If you want a sunny disposition to match the weather, then the best place to catch a taxi is Pefkos on the Greek island of Rhodes and the Turkish resort of Marmaris. Polite taxi drivers were also found in Playa de las Americas in Tenerife, New York City and Palma Nova, Majorca. The study of more than 2,100 holidaymakers in the past 12 months was commissioned by airport
transfers.co.uk. Most said a friendly taxi driver was one who was talkative and shared their local knowledge, while a rude cabbie was someone who was unhelpful.
Airporttransfer.co.uk’s managing director Chris Clarkson told Metro Lon- don: “Taxi rides around the world can be totally different experiences, depending on the time and the place. 'You could stumble upon the most helpful taxi driver in the world, who gives you a guided tour of the area you’re in on the way to your end des- tination. “Or you could have someone that just grunts in response to anything you say.”

AMERICAN TOURIST HACKED TO DEATH BY THAI TAXI DRIVER OVER $2 FARE
A Thai taxi driver has been charged with mur- der after allegedly hacking an American passenger to death who ‘refused to pay a fare worth less than $2’. CCTV caught part of the fatal row in Bangkok, and shows a man - later identified as 32-year-old cab driver Chidchai Utmacha - brandishing a long blade, authorities said. Utmacha allegedly con- fessed to grabbing a 12-inch machete from his trunk and slashing Troy Lee Pilkington with it. But he claims he acted in self-defence after the American charged at him after allegedly refusing to pay a 51 baht fee - $1.60 - for his ride.
