COLUMN
accumulator alone would represent odds of over 15,000/1. SUPER LEAGUE - RUGBY
With only four rounds to go before the play-offs and what looks to be a straight fight between Wigan, Warrington and Huddersfield for the regular season trophy, I can’t help but feel the 7/1 on offer for the Grand Final about the HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS is way over the mark. Remember the team that finished 1st in the regular season is seeded 1 for the Grand Final and therefore avoids both a 1st round match and, more importantly, an away fixture in the knock- out stage. The Giants might just nick that accolade. In any event they are the emerging force and are playing rugby with tremendous style and success at the moment.
NFL - SUPER BOWL
This is the last issue before the new NFL season starts and readers of this column will know of my track record in this sport over the last five years. I have previously touted the chances of the DENVER BRONCOS this year with now not only Peyton Manning at the helm, but also Wes Welker at Tight End/Receiver. That loss to The Patriots might be too hard for the Brady Bunch to overcome. Of course the Bron- cos are now priced accordingly but the 8/1 favourite tags might still represent great value. My second pick and one which is slightly out of the ballpark are the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS. Currently they can be backed at double carpet (33/1) and now that their inspira- tional head coach Sean Payton has returned from his one- year ban to re-join what was the Super Bowl Champions of 2010 and with Drew Brees still at the helm they can easily challenge, not only in the NFC South, but also in the Confer- ence itself. My picks in the eight divisions are as follows;
NFC
SOUTH...NEW ORLEANS (21/10) NFC NORTH...MINNESOTA (17/2) NFC WEST... SEATTLE (6/5) NFC EAST... PHILADELPHIA (4/1) AFC SOUTH... INDIANAPOLIS (3/1) AFC NORTH... BALTIMORE (9/4) AFC WEST... DENVER (1/4) AFC
EAST...NEW ENGLAND (1/4)
The accumulator is a shade over 6,500/1, although obvi- ously the bet should be 6 timers, 7 timers and the acc.
In September we shall turn our attention towards the St. Leger, the Arc de Triomphe, in addition to the Champions League and Europa League.
