BUSINESS CLINIC

Whilst I’m on the subject of elections and voting let’s not forget that women eventually known as suffragettes had to campaign for decades in order to get the vote."

It may seem like I am being a bit pernickety here but seemingly innocent biases can lead to discriminatory practices and cause major issues within businesses; imagine if an organisation found that it had a tendency to recruit men who went to a ‘boys only’ boarding school for senior roles. It may be they share similar views and educational standards, meaning there is an unconscious bias to recruit the familiar, i.e. similarly- educated candidates. But, of course, a woman who applied and was not appointed could complain she had suffered sex discrimination; and who’s to say she hasn’t?

There have been recent media reports about ‘social exclusion’ which in the UK generally means people who are living in poverty or in a minority being unable to enjoy the same privileges and benefits as others; in my case, Beagles. These situations, particularly when exacerbated by concentrations of minority groups in areas or less-privileged positions, have the potential to develop into unlawful discrimination. Whether it’s lawful or not, it limits potential and loads the dice against others who would otherwise have more opportunities.

So that’s why I get cross when I experience bias, whether it is unconscious or not. My mum and I did consider setting up our own mongrel walking group but that too would be excluding others. Did I mention that I’m also part Boxer? I probably would not be allowed to join a Boxer-only walking group because I don’t really look like one. As you can see from my photograph, I’m not ugly and I don’t have their over-sized, big chops. Oh dear, is it wrong to say they are ugly and have big chops…? Anyway, I think I’ve made my point.
