ROYD TOOL GROUP With Robert Mallory, Marketing Manager

Have you seen an increase in demand for marking instruments specifically for tradespeople in recent years?

Absolutely. The growth of the hand tools industry has brought with it an increased need for bigger, better tape measures and high-tech lasers measures for accurate, long distance measuring, for example. But it doesn’t matter what method you use to measure, whether it’s a standard tape measure or high-tech laser measure, the requirement to mark out is still the same.

It’s only really been in the last few years that tradespeople have begun to realise the many advantages to using purpose-built marking tools as, with little-to-no innovation around a standard marker or carpenter’s pencil, their options have been limited in the past.

What makes certain markers more suitable for professional tradespeople?

Whilst the standard pencils and everyday markers are extremely efficient for most industries, they’re not fit for purpose for construction sites and come with their limitations when trying to complete ‘industry specific’ tasks. For example, a common

but major flaw with everyday markers is the inability to cope well with dust (one of the main causes of markers drying out too quickly), which is fairly ever-present on construction sites.

Another great example of standard markers falling short is deep hole marking; they’re simply not designed to mark through deep, small holes. Furthermore, most standard pencils and markers are designed to mark a very limited variety of materials, primarily paper. However for the average tradesman the variety of materials they’re likely to mark is very broad and so they have a real requirement for marking tools that are suitable for this.

This is why it’s essential for tradesmen to have built-for-purpose, professional trade quality tools unlike your standard stationary tools that are solely built for office or household environments.

Can you show us a few examples of the ACER range?

Sure. ACER have developed a range of professional deep hole markers to correspond with the advancement of the construction industry. This range includes:

Acer site holster

• The Deep Hole Retractable Pencil that includes replaceable, snap resistant 120mm pencil leads (Graphite 2B or Yellow) for general marking as well as being able to mark up to 100mm in a 3mm hole!

• The Double Tipped Marker Pen which allows you to draw both thick or thin lines for clear and precise marking,

• The soon-to-be-released ACER Clog Free Markers. These products are purpose- built for construction sites that are much more suited for dust-ridden environments, whilst still performing as a normal marker to draw, write or mark.

• The site holster. This is another great addition, meaning our markers are built for the convenience of the tradesmen, so your marker is always to hand and ready to use, whilst also removing the hassle of trying to balance your pen/pencil behind your ear or lose it in your pocket.
