BUSINESS CLINIC
issue a message to urge the public to manage their household rubbish according to government advice. Namely, that anyone who feels ill at home (whether diagnosed with COVID-19 or not) should place all their waste (including recyclables for the time being) in the general rubbish bin, and should double-bag it, making sure the bags are securely tied. They should then wait at least 72 hours before placing it out for collection.
WISH guidance for the industry At the time of writing this article, the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum (WISH) has published a draft advice document about managing COVID-19 risks in the context of a range of waste management activities. The document is called “WISH INFO 13 COVID-19 and waste management activities” and the intention is that this will be a “live” document that will be updated as new information becomes available. So, make a note to visit
https://wishforum.org. uk/ on a regular basis to keep up to date with the latest guidance.
The WISH Group emphasise that the document is not intended to be a comprehensive ‘one-stop-shop’ for advice on COVID-19 but rather a focus on waste management specific issues, along with some general advice where it is key as well as links to other sources.
WISH says in the document that the UK has an “unprecedented situation which requires swift guidance to the waste management industry as a key service during the current pandemic. This WISH information note is intended to provide basic advice on waste management operations, information on what to do if an employee develops symptoms, advice on contingency planning and similar.”
The document covers the following topics:
1. COVID-19 and why it may be a problem for waste management
2. Symptoms and what to do if an employee shows the symptoms
3. Controlling the spread of COVID-19 - general precautions
4. Contingency planning and maintaining standards
5. Specific advice on: • Vehicles and collections operations
• Landfills, MBT and transfer stations
• MRFs and recycling plants • CA/HWRC sites • Welfare facilities on sites • Weighbridges • Customer/client issues • Statutory equipment inspections
6. Other information sources and links
7. Disclaimer and WISH
Each topic is presented in two parts: a description of the problem and information on what to do, followed by manager advice and highlights that this is advice only and does not replace the operator’s statutory duties.
WAMITAB has compiled this information, which was correct at the time of writing but recommends that readers should check
