WHO confirms the existence of COVID-19 which has caused a number of people in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, to fall ill.
Public Health England (PHE) raises the risk level to the British public from “very low” to “low”.
Two Chinese tourists staying in York are confirmed to be the first UK cases of COVID-19. A plane evacuating Britons from Wuhan lands at RAF Brize Norton, and the passengers are put into a 14-day quarantine at a specialist hospital on the Wirral.
Britain’s third patient and first national tests positive for COVID-19. He had been on a trip to Singapore, then onto France where he inadvertently infected several relatives.
There are now eight confirmed cases in the UK. Health secretary Matt Hancock gives doctors “strengthened powers” to forcibly quarantine people.
A man in England becomes the 20th UK COVID-19 case and the first who contracted it inside the country. In the last week of February more than 440,000 calls were made to the non-emergency line 111 and the stock market ends its worst week since the 2008 financial crash.
Thurs 5 March The first death within the UK of a person who tested positive for CORVID-19. The number of people infected in Britain passes 100.
Wed 11 March Chancellor Rishi Sunak delivers his first Budget. In it is a £12bn package of emergency support to help deal with the crisis. The WHO declares the outbreak a pandemic.
Sun15 March Matt Hancock confirms those over 70 will be told to self-isolate in the coming weeks.
Mon 16 March PM Boris Johnson’s first daily press briefing. He urges everybody in the UK to work from home if possible and avoid theatres, pubs and restaurants.
Tue 17 March
Chancellor Sunak annonces £330bn-worth of government-backed loans and more than £20bn in tax cuts and grants for businesses. NHS England says that all non-urgent operations in England will be postponed from 15 April to free up space for coronavirus patients.
Wed 18 March PM Boris Johnson declares that most schools across England are to close from the coming Friday until further notice. Wales and Scotland agree to the same.
Thurs 19 March There are now 3,269 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK, and 144 people have died after testing positive.
Fri 20 March
PM Boris Johnson orders all pubs, restaurants, theatres and other social venues to close. The Chancellor announces the Government will pay up to 80% of wages for workers at risk of being laid off.
Mon 23 March The Prime Minister announces a period of “lockdown” to be reviewed after three weeks. The police are given powers to detain people gathering in groups of more than two.
Wed 25 March Parliament closes until 21 April.
Thurs 26 March Many thousands of Britons applaud from their doors and windows at 20:00 hours in a co-ordinated show of appreciation for medical staff and people working in the emergency services.
Fri 27 March 22 PM Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock announce they has tested positive for COVID-19.
