Keeping the sector safe
THERE is a saying “May you live in interesting times”, which is usually said to come from an old Chinese proverb but is more likely to refer back to a politician writing in the years leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War. Robert F Kennedy also used the phrase in June 1966, going on to say: “They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other time in history.”
Whatever its provenance, it is clear that it applies to the current coronavirus pandemic with its combination of tragic news stories alongside encouraging displays of community spirit and innovation.
Key worker status During the current coronavirus pandemic, it is clear that some public services are a necessity and whilst initially waste and recycling operatives were not included in the list of “key workers”, this situation was reviewed and the sector is now on the list.
This means that staff are able to travel to and from work and undertake their usual operational duties but it is important that workers adhere to current government guidelines about working during the COVID-19 crisis especially in relation to regularly washing hands or use gel cleansers/wipes.
Obviously, all those involved in handling waste and recycling are always expected
to wear the relevant PPE such as gloves, etc and follow good hygiene practices in the normal course of events. However, now it is especially important that this policy must be enforced. As an additional measure, the latest HSE guidance also suggests the use of nitrile gloves underneath regular safety gloves where possible since they offer resistance to a range of chemicals whilst providing dexterity and puncture resistance.
Guidance for the public Clearly in these times, those providing a service to the public are dependent on the co-operation of the services’ users to also adhere to government advice; this prompted those in the waste and recycling sector to come together and
