Multiple K&IM award winners for 2023 revealed


CILIP’s Knowledge and Information Management (K&IM) group has named Lorcan Dempsey as its 2023 Walford Award winner. The award highlights the impact of Knowl- edge and Information management professionals. Lorcan has been at the forefront of library innovation and trans-


formation in the digital age through his work in various roles including at Jisc and OCLC. The Walford Award is just one of the awards made by the K&IM group, and winners were announced at a ceremony sponsored by CB Resourcing and TFPL. The Walford Award recognises an individual “who has made an outstanding contribution to knowledge and information manage- ment services.” Judges described Lorcan as “an internationally respected library and Information professional he has been both influential and instrumental in the transformation of library and information services in a digital and networked world. During a long and distinguished career, Lorcan has driven innovation and new service thinking to develop shared services, products and directions. He has helped to guide national and international cooperative and R&D programmes. He has also overseen a vari- ety of membership and governance activities, operational services and technical development.” The K&IM group also named the Roche Pharma Development, Knowledge Management Ecosystem as the KM Initiative of the year. Headed by Saju Sadasivan, People & Product Leader/ Knowledge Manage ment Leader-La Roche Ltd, the initiative aims to streamline the sharing of information and knowledge, foster col- laboration, and enable continuous learning. Judges added: “The resulting promotion and adoption of KM in the organisation has been impressive with KM Training Programs, KM Ambassador Network, Communities of Practice – including forums like the KM Council where KM champions collaborate share best practices and streamline KM processes.” Emily Hopkins, Knowledge Manager Health Education NHS England, received the Knowledge Manager of the Year Award. Emily is a CILIP mentor for new professionals undertaking professional qualification and is described as “an Infor mation professional with experience of developing and delivering information and knowledge services to support service delivery and evidence-based practice in the public sector, both frontline and corporate services. She has a self-professed, unashamed geeky belief in the power of information (in all its guises) and a passion for ‘evidence-based everything’.” Helen Alper, Associate Director of Knowledge and Library Ser-


vices at Barts Health NHS Trust, was presented with the Andrew Hutchinson Award for Career Support and Guidance. The one- off award made in honour of Andrew Hutchinson, who died suddenly at the start of last year, recognised Helen’s contribution to CPD and supporting staff, helping them undertake “diplomas, degrees, and master’s courses whilst working,” adding that “she has instilled a culture of continuing professional development amongst her Team, with CPD opportunities being a standing item at team meetings”. Heather Hedden received the Information Resources Print Award


for The Accidental Taxonomist now in its third edition in three years. The book delivers highly technical information is presented in a clear and straightforward way and is supported by a website and blog at http://accidental-taxonomist.blogspot.com/. The Information Resources Electronic Award was made to ACAS for its “excellent example of a well-designed site that is easy to navigate” where the information “is well organised, laid out in restful, clear colours and the designers have clearly thought about what people need to find.”
