a part of her formal Continual Profes- sional Development. CILIP membership includes access to the PKSB tools to help assess needs as well as record skills, experience and knowledge – and this forms a crucial part of Professional Registration.
Marlène says: “I enjoyed reflecting on new learnings and experiences. Looking back at how far I had come felt extremely rewarding; it kept me focused throughout the whole process and helped me kick-start my career. “Professional Registration has given me a chance to look beyond my own sector by encouraging me to visit other libraries, engage with information pro- fessionals outside of the academic sphere and volunteer in a committee role. “It has satisfied my curiosity and opened opportunities to try different things.” And while Professional Registration is undertaken as an individual, it is not something that is done alone. Support is there every step of the way. Signing up to get started is “very straight forward,” says Marlène. “There are fantastic guides and resources avail- able on the CILIP website and further support is also available by phone and email.”
And once underway with Profes- sional Registration, candidates can access ongoing support from volunteer mentors who share their experience and expertise.
to approach Professional Registration, and candidates are encouraged to develop a strategy that suits them. Marlène believes that it helps to be adaptable, saying: “Initially, I might have underestimated how much time was needed to comfortably build up a portfolio whilst working full time in a brand-new role, within a new sector (Higher Educa- tion). My original aim to submit within nine to 12 months of having joined UWE was slightly unrealistic. Nevertheless, as my skills and confidence developed, and with the support of my mentor, I was able to submit my portfolio at the beginning of August 2023 – less than 18 months into my role.”

Marlène says this proved invaluable, explaining: “I had a mentor and couldn’t imagine having gone ahead with Charter- ship without one!
“Nicki was present throughout the jour-
ney, following an initial meeting to confirm whether we were a good fit for each another. Her wealth of knowledge, support and kindness (not to mention the occasional kick in the rear!) provided me with a safe space to thrive in, understanding the gaps in my knowledge and suggesting ways to develop additional skills in my practice.” Professional Registration is designed to be flexible and ensure candidates can find the right level for themselves, as well as being able to manage the additional com- mitment required. There is no “right” way
Having successfully completed her own Chartership, Marlène recommends others look at how it could benefit them and their roles. She says: “I would encourage every- one to go through professional registra- tion. In addition to the recognition, there is great scope for growth at every stage of one’s career (thanks to the different levels offered by CILIP). Investing in yourself is key to further developing your ability to embrace changes and success; you never know how far it will take you!” IP
