Explore intellectual freedom at CILIP Leadership Conference

2024

The date has been set for CILIP Conference 2024 and here conference organiser Louise Greener looks at what to expect. Bookings are already open and CILIP members can take advantage of early bird rates as well as a member discount. There are a limited number of Early Bird tickets, so book early at https://cilipconference.org.uk.

CILIP Conference will return to Birmingham on 10-11 July. Uniting sector leaders from across the globe, the 2024 Conference programme will once again explore ‘top of mind’ issues for leaders at all levels, with a particular focus on intellectual freedom and its associ- ated themes of freedom of expression, censorship and information rights.

Intellectual Freedom is a key pillar of CILIP’s ethical Frame- work and its impact cuts across many aspects of an information professional’s work. That framework informs professional practice and the work carried out by CILIP members in more than 20 sectors – including government, health, charity, public, private and education – and intellectual freedom touches on a host of areas, including freedom from censorship. Delegates will be able to explore these issues and the impact on their own work and within their organisations, helping to develop a greater depth of understanding, new skills and knowledge. Wider challenges and opportunities within the sector will also feature; programme highlights include a workshop on CILIP’s imminent future literacy project launch, aimed at developing leaders and organisation’s ability to weather-check horizons and step forward in full preparedness.

Other planned sessions include storytelling for impact; considering the sector’s response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals; planning crisis and strategic communica- tions; and building future resilience in the face of continuing resource and budget pressures.

For KM and IM practitioners (or people considering making a career change) we will once again be offering a ‘confer- ence-within-a-conference’ addressing the big themes in Knowledge Management, Information Governance and Infor- mation Management.

And there will be plenty of networking opportunities across the two days, from lunchtime topic tables to the Presidential Dinner and Drinks Reception. A comprehensive exhibition floor will also feature, offering delegates the opportunity to forge relationships with key suppliers, try new products and start procurement conversations. Nick Poole, CILIP CEO says: “Librarians, information and knowledge management practitioners around the world are

united by a common belief in free and open access to knowledge. In an age of political polarisation, mass media and disinformation, our profession stands for diversity, inclusion, freedom of access to information and freedom of expression. “This year, CILIP’s flagship conference will act as a clarion call to leaders at every level of their institution and all around the world – let’s come together in a spirit of solidar- ity and ambition to defend our values and to promote the rights of information users.”

Programme highlights: l Developing future literacy as a leader l The sector’s response to the UN Sustainability Goals l Storytelling for impact l Crisis and strategic communications

l Building future resilience in the face of continuing re- source and budget pressures

As well as informing delegates of the sector’s latest developments, Conference will help to move the needle on pressing issues within your organisation and aim to support your next career move as you progress through the sector. Whether you’re a new, established or aspiring leader, CILIP Conference will support your leadership skills and connect you to a community of leadership peers as we navigate a period of change and disruption, together. Join us in 2024 as we gather our leadership community once more! IP
