helped look after the library when I as in primary school. As I got older, I knew I wanted to work with children and was delighted when I saw my previous role of children’s library assistant advertised. I immediately applied as it combined two of my favourite things, books and work- ing with children. As I learnt more about the profession, I realised how much I loved the library community and how rewarding I found it so I knew it was a career path worth pursuing.

What’sthebestpartofyourjob? I really enjoy meeting lots of children in the school libraries I go to and just chatting about books with them! Noth- ing beats the feeling of speaking to a child who is a bit of a reluctant reader and showing them a book that might catch their interest, then seeing their eyes light up when they realise there are books for them in the library too.

HowhasbeingpartoftheCILIP Communityhelpedyoudevelop? Having the opportunity to network and see what other professionals are doing has been an invaluable experience. I think being a part of CILIP was especially help- ful at the very beginning of my career as I found out more about the different sectors and roles within libraries and information or knowledge management.

This is something I still utilise CILIP for, as there are so many aspects of our roles.

Whatisyourbiggesthopeforthe futureofthesector?

I hope that it can continue to be an in- clusive and diverse sector to work in as I think that is so important. I also hope that building the public profile of libraries in particular continues so that people out- side of the profession can see the breadth of services a library can offer and how amazing libraries truly are.

What’sthebestpartofyourjob? As an Academic Engagement Librarian at a university, the best part of my job is the one-to-one support of our students. Students can request an appointment about searching for their assignment, referencing and referencing management. I like the face-to-face contact and the lis- tening to the research ideas of our future nurses, paramedics and midwives.

Whatmadeyouwanttobepartof theprofession?

I had worked as a public librarian and school librarian, but couldn’t progress any further in my career. I studied for my Chartership during the Covid pandemic and afterwards applied for qualified Librarian roles.

HowhasbeingpartoftheCILIP Communityhelpedyoudevelop? Being part of the CILIP community has helped me to progress in my career and become more secure in my knowledge as a Librarian. It has also helped me achieve a goal of mine, which was to become a Carnegie judge. By joining my local CILIP YLG group, I realised this is something that could be achievable for me as others in the group had also been judges.

Whatisyourbiggesthopeforthe futureofthesector?

I hope the sector will grow and grow, with more support for Librarians who are starting out in their careers. I hope to give back to the profession someday by becoming a PRSO myself and helping other people to achieve their Certification or Charterships in the future. IP
