much of the UK – locally, regionally and, in all likelihood, nationally. If national elections do not take place this year, they definitely have to be called by the end of the year with the current Parliament set to end by 17 December at the latest, with an election to follow within weeks. Until a date is announced formally there will be continued speculation, but what is certain is that all political parties are gearing up for a trip to the polls one way or another.

And with that in mind, CILIP has been formulating its own plan of action for an election year, shifting the focus of its public affairs work to ensure information professionals are part of the conversation. We want to demonstrate the value of the profession, by showing politi- cians of all colours how the services you provide can help them create a better, fairer and more sustainable society.

Whether it is improving education through access to information at school, FE or university libraries or helping to deliver better health outcomes for people through public libraries or at the heart of the NHS, information professionals are supporting communities and helping to level-up society.

The impact of knowledge and information managers in businesses is helping to create a sustainable economic future for the UK, build- ing new opportunities in the fourth industrial revolution powered by data and information. We know that you are already playing a huge role in improving lives and outcomes for all of your users, and we will be using the coming year to make sure that politicians and decision-makers recognise the contribution and impact of your work. That advocacy can only be strengthened by your membership, helping individu- als from across the sectors to speak with a united voice and aim –a strong and valued profession at the heart of positive change for all. This advocacy will supplement CILIP’s ongoing work throughout the year to support our individual members and the wider informa- tion profession landscape. Whether that is through events, training, conferences or the opportunity to undertake professional registra- tion. Yes, this is likely to be a year of change but let’s not forget that it is also a year of opportunity.

ITH 2024 upon us, it won’t have escaped anyone’s attention that this will be a year of change – not just for CILIP, which will see a new Chief Executive, but also in wider society. Elections are on the cards for
