Congratulations to Yoto Carnegie Medal winners

The winners of this year’s Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing and Illustration have been revealed at a ceremony at London’s Barbican Centre. Here Rob Green takes a look at the winners – including the Shadower’s Choice vote winners – and talks to this year’s Chair of Judges, Janet Noble.

THE Yoto Carnegies recognise the best in children’s writing and illustration, drawing on the expertise of children’s librarians to deliver a unique awards and shadowing programme. This year’s winners both engage readers through their use of language and imagery to develop characters and gripping storytelling.

Carnegie Medal for Writing

The winner of the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing is Manon Steffan Ros, for The Blue Book of Nebo (Firefly Press) – a tale of a mother and son’s relationship following a near-apocalyptic event. First published in Welsh, the title had already picked up a string of awards for its powerful storytelling. Now, translated into English, The Blue Book of Nebo has captivated CILIP’s Yoto Carnegie Medal judges – earning Manon a prestigious Carnegie Medal for writing, and the first to be awarded to a book in transalation. In her winner’s speech she said: “One of the greatest privileges of my life has been the fact that I was raised through the medium of the Welsh language. Having two languages from the outset of my life has brought me so much joy and opportunity. There’s a huge, lively, thriving Welsh language cultural scene that I’m honoured to be a part of. I’m told that The Blue Book of Nebo is the first book in translation to win the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing, a fact that is a source of great delight and hope for me.”

The book tells the story of Dylan and his mother, who live an isolated existence fol- lowing the event known as The End, when the electricity supply went off for good. Dylan was six when the event happened, and the

book takes place as he negotiates life as a 14-year-old. Both Dylan and his mother have had to learn how to survive on their own, picking up new skills and knowledge along the way – each jotting down their thoughts in the eponymous blue notebook. The Blue Book of Nebo is powerful YA novel that explores the human ability to adapt and find strength in difficult circum- stances. Manon adds: “I used to see the word Carnegie on the covers of my favourite books as a child, and the fact that The Blue Book of Nebo now has that honour bestowed upon it means more than I can say.”

Carnegie Medal for Illustration Jeet Zdung has been named as this year’s winner of the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration, with his stunning mix of watercolour and Manga style illustrations for Saving Sorya: Chang and the Sun Bear (Kingfisher, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Books). Jeet’s style creates a graphic novel feel for the story based on the true adventures of wildlife conservationist, Trang Nguyen.
