CILIP Conference organiser Louise Greener takes a look at the latest announcements and highlights for this year’s conference, which takes place in Birmingham on 12 and 13 July. Places are still available and can be booked at www.cilipconference.org.uk.


THE theme for CILIP Conference 2023 is Leadership, and whether you are an established or aspiring leader there is plenty on offer to help you develop your skills and discover new ways to navigate opportunities and challenges in the sector.


Evidence and impact


Kate Robinson, previous CILIP President chairs this session which considers how information professionals can do more to evidence their impact. The session will explore two case studies, from: Philip Marshall, Director of The London


Library, regarding their 2020 London Library Impact Report, undertaken by economic consul- tancy Nordicity and Chartered Accountants Saffrey Champness. The report revealed that The London Library generates an estimated annual value of £21.3m for the UK economy – equivalent to five times the Library’s annual operating expenditure. Krystal Vittles, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Suffolk Libraries, regarding their recent 2023 report which found that their wellbeing information service and Open Spaces weekly drop-ins generated £41m worth of social value, saving the NHS £542,000 locally.

their vulnerabilities, whether this be around their mental health; general questions or concerns; or in raising challenges, learnings and mistakes (see p.16).


This session, chaired by Hélène Russell of The Knowledge Business and Chair of the CILIP KIM SIG will look at how KM practitioners can help to foster a culture of trust and psychological safety within organ- isations, in such a way that all feel able to share insights and concerns, and therefore all benefit from transparency of learnings.


Future Funding and Financial Resilience Public libraries find themselves increasingly challenged to secure income from new sources, including commissioned work, new contracts with Local Government and innovative use of their spaces and services. Since 2020, Libraries Connected has been running Future Funding, a cohort-based approach to equipping library services to face these new challenges with creativity and confidence.
