COPYRIGHT Essentials training takes place online on 16 and 23 March, delivered by Naomi Korn Associates in partnership with CILIP.

The course teaches the basics of copy- right law and regulations, helping library, information and knowledge managers understand how it fits into their roles. The two-day training is aimed at those who are new to copyright, as well as those looking to refresh their knowledge on the subject and recent changes to regulations. Turning night into day

HARRY Potter Book Night has been rebranded as Harry Potter Book Day by the publishers Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury said the rebrand was

“to ensure that this annual celebration becomes even more inclusive for fans of all ages – whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, you can celebrate at whatever time of the day, or night, suits you”. The publisher creates a series of resources that are available as a downloadable event kit to help organisers in libraries and other venues. The date of the event is also moving, and will take place on 12 October this year.

Saving tips for members

CILIP is holding an online session to help members find ways to cope with increased costs in everyday life.

Price rises, from fuel to food, have put pressure on many household budgets with wages failing to keep up with costs. The webinar, which is free for CILIP members and all employees of CILIP Employer Partners, will hear from Better with Money’s Katie Vye who will be sharing tried and tested money saving tips. The online session takes place at 12.30pm on 22 February, and places can be booked at https://bit.ly/3HgMQt8.

8 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

Induction pack for public library new recruits

AN INDUCTION pack created by CILIP for new starters in public libraries has launched to welcome them into the profession and pro- vide insights and information to help shape their careers. Funded by Arts Council England, the magazine-style guide is underpinned by the priorities of the sector’s leaders: to reflect the rich diversity of the popu- lations they serve, be free at the point of contact, and be welcoming and inclusive to all.

Compiled and published by CILIP

with help from Libraries Connected, and a panel of library leaders, Welcome to Libraries – your guide to working in public libraries, contains case stud- ies from library services and shares the experience of leaders, current staff and experts from the sector. The publication is available to download from CILIP’s website, and CILIP hopes it will be valu- able to all those working in public librar- ies, not only new-starters. Key aspects of working in public lib raries are covered by Welcome to

Libraries, including:

l The variety of roles played by a mod- ern public library service;

l History and context of the public library sector in England;

l Library ethics and their connection to public service;

l Library science, including evi- dence-based;

l Key elements of building diverse and inclusive collections, buildings and services;

l Universal library offers: Reading, Creativity and Culture, Health and Well-being, and Information and Digital.

In his foreword to the pack, Luke Burton, Director of Libraries at Arts Council England, said: “Welcome to the beginning of your career in the public library service. You have joined one of the most rewarding and well-regard- ed professions, with a strong identity, clear ethics and values. According to the Ipsos Mori 2021 Veracity Poll, public library staff are trusted by 93 per cent of the population to tell the truth and give accurate information.” Jo Cornish, CILIP’s Chief Development Officer, said: “I know first-hand from my experience working in public librar- ies, that they are an invaluable resource in a local community, and an exciting and wide-ranging place to work. Public libraries are constantly evolving in order to meet the needs of their communities. They provide space, inspiration, resources, sanctuary and human connection. “This could not be achieved without a committed, professional workforce. I am so proud to have been part of the team that created this guide. Welcome to Libraries will support the next generation of pub- lic library staff to pursue fulfilling and rewarding careers.” Download the pack for free at www.cilip. org.uk/inductionpack.
