Longevity and the Library, Information and Knowledge sector
Julia Randell-Khan looks at the recent CILIP RPG workshop Longevity for library, information and knowledge professionals, which was held in December 2022. The workshop focussed on many topics related to professional longevity including transferable skills, portfolio careers, staying engaged and connected, second (or what are sometimes called encore) careers, and navigating retirement or non-retirement as we all live our much longer lives.
I AM a former lawyer and had a senior role at the international law fi rm Fresh- fi elds Bruckhaus Deringer leading the knowledge management function at the fi rm. I worked very closely with our Library and Information profes- sionals group. When I left Freshfi elds about eight years ago, after a 30-plus year career in the legal sector, I became very interested in career transition at mid-life – and how you work out your “what next” after a long working life. In particular, how to use your skills and talents that have been amassed over many years of working life. My exploration of this stage in life – I was 55-years-old when I left Freshfi elds – took me back to university to research the opportunities for older workers and transition at this point in life. I went to Stanford University in the US and spent time at their Centre on Longevity –
