Celebrating 125 years of our Royal Charter


CILIP CEO Nick Poole refl ects on the 125th anniversary of CILIP’s Royal Charter and explores how the Association will be marking the moment throughout 2023.


“We have only to hope that the Library Association of the United Kingdom will fl ourish and that it will justify itself in public estimation by assisting libraries to become what they ought to be: effi cient instruments of national education”


With these words, The Athenaeum welcomed the announcement of a new Library Association for the UK at the fi rst ever international Library Conference in 1877.


Although launched in 1877 and operating as an informal group for nearly 20 years, the Library Association fi nally ‘became offi - cial’ when its application for a Royal Charter was approved by Queen Victoria in 1898. This year, CILIP is celebrating 125 years since that formative moment. We are refl ect- ing on the past, present and future of the library and information profession – along the way celebrating the people and milestones that have marked a century-and-a-quarter of progress and innovation.


We Are CILIP – past, present and future It seems appropriate that the title of our current fi ve-year strategy and action plan is We Are CILIP – a reminder that fi rst and foremost, CILIP is a community of like-minded librarians, information pro- fessionals and knowledge management practitioners that share a common set of values and a belief in the importance of changing lives through quality information and services.
