PEOPLE

Arthur was a member of SCONUL, serving on various sub-committees, and in 1991 he was elected to its Council. He was a member of the British Standards Institution’s technical committee on Library and Publishing Statistics and also a member of the committee of Library Co-opera- tion in Lancashire.

He was a very modest man and a caring and considerate boss who was highly regarded by his staff and there have been many tributes from colleagues commenting on his kindness and approachability. His sense of humour was also much appreciated and, in the words of David Sum- mers “lightened many a difficult situation”. His successor, Jacqueline Whiteside, noted: “Arthur was to me an unfail- ingly generous, magnanimous, encouraging and supportive predecessor – never thinking of himself, but only of the

Robert Reyner I

t is with great sadness that we report the sudden passing of CILIP member Rob Reyner at the age of 44 from Vascular EDS at his home in Maida Vale, London.

Rob was born in Hammersmith, London in 1977. His family moved to Ickenham and he studied at Selborne Primary and Drayton Manor High School, Ealing. He then gained a place at Northum- bria University in Newcastle on the Library and Information Stud- ies course, graduating BA Hons in 1999. Whilst at Northumbria, he began his information career, working part-time in the university library.

He enjoyed living in Newcastle and made many friends there with whom he remained close for the rest of his life. It was during this

time that he became active in the LGBT+ community at his university, and he was out and proud for the rest of his life.

A year after graduating, Rob returned to London in search of new roles and began working in the commercial sectors of legal and finance as a Business Information Researcher. I first met Rob when he was recruited as a temporary researcher at Deutsche Bank, he was a popular and dedicated member of the team. We became friends, kept in touch, and a few years later we were very happy to be able to invite him back to the team. Like many successful information professionals, Rob had that essential keen eye for detail and was a stickler for precision and accuracy! As well as a CILIP member and supporter, Rob was

an active member of SLA, and served with me on SLA Europe’s events committee from 2014-2017. In this role, Rob brought his love of a good party (and a quiz) together with his impressive organisational skills, to provide inval- uable assistance in helping organise many successful SLA events during this time.

Rob enjoyed attending membership events and vendor parties. He built up a large professional network with lasting friendships at many of the firms he worked at during his career, including Lazard, Deutche Bank, Wil- liams Lea, RR Donelly (Morgan Stanley), and Integreon (Société Générale).

Rob loved going to the cinema, the theatre, and one of his greatest passions was music. Rob was a committed vegan and was dedicated to helping the planet in whatever way he could. He made friends wherever he went and was always enthusiastic about meeting up and going for a walk, to a pub quiz, or to a poetry reading at the South- bank. Rob always made the most of living in London and he loved living life to the fullest, keeping track of his busy social life in his full Filofax diary. Always one to tell it like it is, Rob’s raised eyebrow was legendary, as was his sense of humour, and he has left a big hole in many lives. Rob is survived by his mother June and will be much missed by his friends and col- leagues. Rob had Vascular EDS, a rare genetic connective tissue disorder. If you would like to make a donation in Rob’s memory to Annabelle’s Challenge, a UK registered charity supporting families affected by Vascular EDS, please visit the following link: www.reds4veds.org/robert-reyner

good of the University Library, its staff and users”. In retirement Arthur was able to devote more time to reading, especially the Classics and music. He was a devoted family man and with his wife Lucia (to whom he was married for 60 years), enjoyed spending time with their family. Sadly Lucia died in 2015 and in 2019 Arthur moved to Harrogate near to his daughter Nicci. He died there on 23 August 2022 after a short illness. He is survived by his daughter Nicci, his son John and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
