HAT does the arrival of 2023 mean to you: New Year, New Role(s), New Special
Interest Group? If you make just one new year resolution you should focus on self-improvement, which can provide the key to personal and professional growth.
Defining your personal goals for the year
You may be looking to develop your role, seeking promotion or using your skills in a new role in a different organisation. You may be looking to fill in gaps in your knowledge, such as teaching research skills or improving collaboration skills for your team. In some subject areas a good way to improve and reach your goals is to break your learning down into bite sized chunks. The CILIP eLearning Hub brings resources together at:
https://tinyurl.com/CILIPhub and many online courses from the Open University and Coursera www.
coursera.org/ are available free of charge. Spending as little as an hour a week on bite sized training can give you the tools to grow what you know and enhance your CV.
Personal Development Plans (PDPs)
You can take control of the direction of your career and life by completing a simple personal development plan. The online CILIP Personal Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) at:
www.cilip.
org.uk/page/PKSB can help with the process. Using these tools lets you work out where you are going and how to achieve your goals. You are also demonstrating that you are ready for promotion, a move to a new role or new activity in your personal life.

Track progress
As you move through the year, it is important to keep track of your progress. If you are working you could revisit and update your PKSB and discuss progress with your manager or mentor. You could use that simple PDP to track progress in both your work and personal life. CILIP Resources and CILIP Network connections will allow you to supercharge your development.
Power of CILIP Networks Do not underestimate the value of CILIP Member Networks in providing quick access to new beginnings, new opportunities, and a fresh start. CILIP RPG, for example, cuts across regions, sectors and subjects to provide a powerful network for library, information and knowledge professionals. CILIP RPG: Why change and why now?
What do you understand by “retirement”? Slowing down, stepping aside, withdrawing into a life of leisure? We feel that this view of retirement is out of date. With increases in life expectancy and economic insecurity we need to rethink what we expect retirement to mean. A key message from the recent Longevity seminar was that fundamental shifts in attitudes towards many areas are needed, particularly in our attitudes towards work and retirement. (See the

At CILIP Conference in Liverpool we canvassed views from members, exhibitors and staff on the CILIP mission and vision. Most people found that the letters RPG standing for Retired Professionals Group was not helpful and did not fully reflect our current activity.
The CILIP RPG Committee has now revised our mission statement and come up with a shortlist of new names.
We need your help please! We now need your help please, whether you are a CILIP member or not. Please complete the consultation survey to let us have your views on the proposed CILIP RPG mission statement and options for a new name:
