don relating to Chefoo School records his life there between 1920-25.15 According to his student record, the only material that we have about him at the University Archives, Andrew matric- ulated in December 1925 when he was 17 years of age, and was accepted into the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong on 18 January 1926. How- ever, there is no record of his grades for any subject, and it is recorded that he left for Shanghai in 1926. According to his obituary, shared by his family on legacy. com, he was educated at Chefoo School, which was founded by the China Inland Mission (later the Overseas Missionary Fellowship) for the children of western missionaries, in Chefoo (now Yantai), Shangdong Province, China. According to the Chefoo Schools Association Maga- zine dated July 1984 held at SOAS in London, Andrew was a Chefusian from 1920 to 1926 and had a fond memories of Chefoo, as he once wrote: ‘I sit at my desk (in Victoria, B.C., Canada) and have a view which has some of the characteristics of Chefoo… ships, boats, yachts, birds, seals, ‘killer’ whales, sea-lions, sea otters – always something to see. At the moment the sea is behaving rather like a Chefoo Septem- ber to October, ‘breaking up’ storm.’16 Andrew left for Canada in 1926 to attend the University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Engineering. He continued the commitment of his
uncle and father to public service by becoming an engineer and architect, and made a considerable contribution to Canadian society, especially in housing design. He was Advisor on Housing Design17
