Library and information courses accredited by CILIP

The selection of CILIP’s accredited courses reflect a fast-changing and increasingly wide-ranging profession covering a diverse range of disciplines, skills, sectors, and nations. You can find the full list on the CILIP website at www.cilip.org.uk/Qualifications with links to departments and courses.

MAPPING the many directions that the information professions are travelling in is one of CILIP’s roles. As the world embarks on what is seen as the fourth industrial revolution – a process that a government whitepaper says is “blurring the lines between the physical, digital and biological worlds” – the information professions are where it all meets. It means they are evolving and CILIP sees them now covering these areas:.

l library and information l archives and records l data l knowledge management

This has been acknowledged by pieces of work like CILIP’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Report, The impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics, on the information professions, which can be read at www.cilip.org.uk/researchreport. Writ- ten by Dr Andrew Cox, Senior Lecturer at The University of Sheffield’s Information School, it highlights the profession’s current strengths and vulnerabilities in relation to AI, saying: “The primary function of the outputs of the research will be to drive the refresh of CILIP’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base, and from this the ‘ecosys- tem’ of teaching, learning and professional development for current and future infor- mation, knowledge management and library professionals.”

26 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

Different learning providers make dif- ferent decisions about how to tackle these challenges.

Below is a list of CILIP Accredited provid- ers. www.cilip.org.uk/Qualifications.

Aberystwyth

The Department of Information at Aberystwyth Univer- sity has the most CILIP accredited courses. Dr Anoush Simon, head of information studies, said: “This means that you can have confidence in receiving excellent teaching and academic support, and a professionally accredited qualification at the end of your studies.” She added that “staff expertise is complemented through close professional links both locally and nationally. The presence of staff with expertise in the professional sectors of both libraries and archives, in- cluding a growing specialism in digital information and AI, enables us to share expertise to deliver schemes like Digital Information and Media Management as well as the well-established, broad-based courses. All our courses are available as full time (on-campus) and flexible distance learning, allowing students to work while studying for a professional qualification. For 2022 we have new online standalone short courses (as well as optional modules) in School Libraries, Children and Reading, Music Librarianship, and Digital Presence.”
