N

ext year, in 2023, CILIP will celebrate the 125th Anniver- sary of our Royal Charter, granted royal assent in 1898 by Queen Victoria three years before her death in 1901. It is salutary to think that for more than 40 of those years, our late departed Queen Elizabeth II served as our Royal Patron. I would like to use my introduction this month to pay testament to our Patron, HM Queen, and to share my deepest condolences with His Majesty King Charles III and the Royal Family. Whatever your view on the trappings of Constitutional Monarchy, the Queen stood for billions of people as a symbol of duty and pub- lic service. Throughout her long reign, she kept true to that famous commitment, made on her 21st Birthday in 1947: “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service.”

The Queen said these words two short years after the end of World War II, a conflict that re-shaped the modern world. In that same year, at Bell Labs in New Jersey, pioneers John Bardeen, Walter Brittain and William Shockley demonstrated the first-ever operational transistor – the tiny information-processing device that ushered in the Information Age.

The Queen’s lifetime ran in parallel with the evolution of comput- ing and large-scale information processing – the digital revolution which today shapes all our lives, for both good and ill. On 26 March 1976, while visiting the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) in Malvern, the Queen became the first Royal ever to send an email. The message, which announced the introduction of a new programming language to the then-nascent ARPANET, was titled “A message from Her Majesty the Queen”, and signed simply ‘Elizabeth R’ (the same signature she used when sending her first-ever tweet at the Science Museum in October 2014).

In this issue of Information Professional, we explore how Digital Transformation is shaping libraries, information services and the practice of knowledge management. The revolution that began dur- ing HM Queen Elizabeth II’s reign continues today, with new tools and methods providing new ways to access, use and share informa- tion at hitherto unimaginable scale. We like to think Her Majesty would have approved. In memoriam, 2022.
