IN DEPTH
We are CILIP – Digital transformation
We Are CILIP is the five year strategy and action plan launched at the start of this year, and which feeds into CILIP’s continuing work to support the library, knowledge and information management professions. It is underpinned by four central themes – Leadership, Sustainability, Equality and Social Justice, and Digital Transformation. Here Rob Green looks at what Digital Transformation means for the profession.
DIGITAL Transformation is a one of four central themes underpinning the We are CILIP strategy, which has been created to build a resilient, future-proofed workforce.
The five-year strategy was launched at the start of this year and will continue to evolve and feed into CILIP’s work to support members and the wider profession. As well as looking at skills and knowledge in the profession, it also puts values and ethics at the centre of CILIP’s mission. We all saw how quickly organisations were able to ramp up their digital services during the pandemic. In March 2020, huge swathes of the UK’s working population moved out of offices and into a situation where homes became the base for decen- tralised operations. Even before the pandemic, digital transac- tions had been growing – but the switch to remote working, and isolation heightened our awareness of digital services. In fact, across all sectors of library, information and knowledge sectors digital access and resources have been growing in popularity – with or without the pandemic. However, digital transformation is about more than resources and how we access those resources – AI, machine learning and big data all have

the power to transform services and change the role of information professionals within organisations. The We are CILIP, action plan states that through Digital Transformation “Our members will help their users, communities and organisations to harness the positive potential of new and disruptive technologies including AI, machine learning, automation and robotics while minimising the risks. “The impact of new technology on the pro- fession will continue to grow. AI, machine learning and automation are already with us and they continue to develop at a pace. These technologies can be valuable tools, but they are not without risk.” A number of steps have already been tak- en to help ensure CILIP members have the skills and knowledge they need to adapt to new ways of working.
