The 44 -acre site house around three quar- ters of the BL’s collections. CILIP Conference and Expo – first keynote revealed

THE first keynote speaker for this year’s CILIP Conference and Expo has been revealed as Professor Jacqueline McGlade.

Professor of Natural Prosperity, Sus- tainable Development and Knowledge Systems at UCL, Jacqueline’s research “encompasses the knowledge systems that express the dynamics of our planet, its ecosystems, geophysical processes and interactions that human societies have with the natural world to survive and prosper”. Her work has a strong focus on the many ways that societies are depen- dent on nature using a wide range of data and analytical techniques. “I am currently engaged in field work,

data analysis to underpin the development of a new philosophy of natural prosperity – the norms and behaviours and explicit measures of society’s inter dependency with nature needed for wellbeing and prosperity. The philosophy addresses- issues of access to resources, equity, transformation, resilience and institu- tional and cognitive aspects of social capital,” she explains. “The development of the natural prosperity draws on data and information from earth observation, in-situ measurements, experimental data, fuzzy logic, agent based and non-linear modelling, statistical surveys, mapping, citizen science, community co-laborato- ries, textual data analysis of social media, news, institutional and academic publica- tions, and semantic technologies including

knowledge graphs and ontologies.” Following two years of virtual events, due to the impact of the Covid pandemic CILIP

Conference and Expo 2022

returns as an in-person event. Taking place in Liverpool on 7 and 8 July, the Conference and Expo will be a chance to hear from leading names in the infor- mation, knowledge and library world; network with colleagues; take part in practical sessions; and much more. Conference organiser Rachel Kudlick says: “The theme for 2022 is ‘Libraries, Information and Knowledge for Sus- tainability’ and we want to leverage the collective wisdom of our sector to explore the role of information, evidence and lit- eracy as a truly effective and joined-up response to Climate Change. “As well as a comprehensive conference programme, the exhibition floor will be a hive of activity offering the chance to experiment with tech, chat with new col- leagues in a relaxed environment, discover new products and services and sow the seeds of collaborative projects. “This is your Conference – it’s a platform for you to discuss what is im- portant to you, a chance to share the work that you have been doing and to discover how suppliers and organisations can help you, and a valuable couple of days to reflect on your professional development.” Early bird deals are available now – visit

Elsevier negotiations with HE sector progress

TALKS between the UK’s university sec- tor and its largest publisher, Elsevier, were looking positive as it emerged that progress had been made. The negotiations were ongoing as Infor- mation Professional went to press. A Jisc spokesperson said: “Following Jisc’s continued rigorous negotia- tions on behalf of the universities and research sector we have received a new and improved proposal from Elsevier. The Elsevier Negotiations Team believe this latest proposal is a positive move forward as it addresses the sector’s

negotiation requirements – namely full and immediate open access to research and a material reduction in expenditure with Elsevier. The proposal has been shared with our members for consulta- tion, with a recommendation to accept from the Elsevier Negotiation Team, which is negotiating with Elsevier on behalf of the sector.” The sector’s negotiating position was believed to have been strengthened by its public ‘Plan B’ discussions.
