‘‘ Hannah
Happy new year everyone! I’m so pleased to be able to update you on what I’ve been doing over the last month. One of my favourite pieces of work I did over December was my Christmas Card making session. The event was aimed at children, it was a fun, creative session which got families into the festive spirit. I loved having the ownership of all the different aspects of the event, designing, promoting and engaging. I worked with managers and volunteers to organise the event; we even had a visit from Santa!
For the event I set up a pop up Christmas tree card activity. For those with little fingers I found a range of stickers and other craft resources for them to make their own creation. The children loved making their own cards for friends and loved ones. Their parents couldn’t even pull them away from the craft table!
Events planning has to be my favourite thing about working in libraries. The freedom to design your own ideas and go ahead with them is
We always want to engage with young people; however I feel there is a gap in the opportunities we offer in our libraries.

HRISTMAS may be a fading memory, but for Kirklees’ Library Apprentices Ambreen and Hannah, the festive

so great and the support from staff is amazing. I love working in the community and engaging with a range of people from different backgrounds with different abilities and needs. I’ve really enjoyed working with children and helping them to develop their skills, I’d love to do more school visits and run engagement sessions with children.
This month I’m organising a flipbook making workshop as I really enjoy graphic design and think it would be a great way to engage with students. I haven’t done a lot of face-to-face work with teenagers and think this would be a fantastic experience. We always want to engage with young people; however I feel there is a gap in the opportunities we offer in our libraries. We do lots of work with schools and colleges but not many sessions in our libraries, so I feel this would be a brilliant opportunity for students to meet new people and take part in a fun session.
I’m really looking forward to seeing what this year brings! I have my assessment for my apprenticeship this year, where I get to work on my own project, looking at ways to improve our service and implementing new ideas.

A stranded Elf, Santa and a Christmas message… I’m not talking about what happens behind the closed doors of Kirklees libraries during Christmas. I’m referring to Alfie the elf who graced Kirklees with his presents (see what I did there), whilst waiting for Santa to rescue him.

theatre kindly sent Alfie the Elf to Cleckheaton, Birstall, Kirkheaton, Batley, Greenwood and Slaithwaite library. The Librarians reached out to me asking if I could help with the running of the event at Birstall. Would I turn down the chance to see those little faces light

up because they believe Santa’s little helper is stood right in front of them? Yes (that’s a joke). Would I miss the chance of my face lighting up when I saw Santa’s Elf (and yes he is real)? Of course not!
I signed myself up for Birstall and Batley. At the Batley event I was merely a photographer but at Birstall library, I was helping with crowd control (we all know how wild the little cherubs can get when dosed up on milk and cookies, and then a REAL life Elf appears!).
Although, I was only there to help with the set up and be an extra pair of hands, there’s something truly magical about seeing little imaginations flying away (obviously I sat and watched the whole hour-long event with them). I even got to share the experience at Batley with my little one… and if I’m completely honest, if the other libraries weren’t too far away from me, I would have watched it again at every single one (yes it was that good). To really give you an emphasis on how much I loved it… I was the only adult at the Batley library to ask for a selfie with Alfie! IP
