editor, Shane Godbolt, developed the publication originally as a newsletter for the group, however it quickly grew in popularity prompting the establishment of a quarterly professional journal The Health Libraries Review (HLR).
Health Library and Information Services Directory (HLISD) HLG has been curating and publishing a directory of health libraries since 1957. This printed publication was widely distributed and continued to be available until moved online in 2002. Today HLISD, a partnership initiative funded by Health Education England and HLG continues to provide a comprehensive directory of all health library and information services operating in the UK and Ireland.
Core Collections
A publication listing “books and periodicals for medical libraries and hospitals” was first produced in 1952. In 1992 this would become the Core Collection of Medical Books and Journals. Still going strong, the latest edition was published in November 2022. In addition to the Medical Core Collection HLG also publish core collections on Nursing and on Mental Health.
Awards and Partnership Working HLG are proud of the bursaries and awards available to our members. Each of the librarians named here were founding members of the original Medical Section and their contribution to the field of health libraries are commemorated in these longstanding awards.

programme began in 1968 and remains a fixture of HLG’s flagship conferences. These lectures provide an opportunity to hear from people working in a related health field as well as from library professionals. The Leslie Morton memorial bursary was established in 2010 to encourage attendance at international conferences in health librarianship, medical bibliography or medical history and awards up to £1,000 to the successful recipient. HLG also has a long history of collaboration. In 1953 the group helped host the first International Congress of Medical Librarianship (ICML) and we continue to form partnerships with other health libraries both in the UK and at an international level. Sponsored by HLG, University Health & Medical Librarians Group (UHMLG) and the Library and Information Research Group (LIRG), the Research in the Workplace Award (RIWA) funds workplace research projects with the aim of developing a strong evidence base for delivering best. In 2021 HLG launched a new international Leadership Exchange Bursary with Health Libraries Australia (ALIA/HLA). Originally intended to be a travel bursary this new award has been adapted so that the successful recipients can attend a programme of events remotely.
Conferences HLG’s biennial conferences have been an important fixture in health library calendars since the 1980s. Valued for the opportunity to come together and network, these conferences are also an opportunity to share and learn about latest developments and innovations in our sector.

cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we did run a programme of successful virtual events in 2021/22 and we are busy planning more events to celebrate our 75th anniversary.
Advocacy and strategy for the future
In 2021 we were proud to learn of the emphasis on health at CILIP’s AGM. Professor Chris Whitty, author Matt Haig and school librarian Amy McKay were awarded Honorary Fellowships for their contributions to health and wellbeing across various sectors and Penny Bonnet, HILJ’s Assistant Editor received the President’s Citation. As health librarians we share CILIP’s mission to put library and information skills and professional values at the heart of an equal, democratic, and prosperous society. Going forward we want to embrace our group’s history of collaboration and inclusion and ensure that we continue to embrace, support and celebrate all Knowledge, Library and Information Professionals working in and across health and social care.
A call to action
Since its inception many individuals have been responsible for creating, shaping and sustaining HLG. To namecheck all those people in one article would be impossible but we do thank everyone for their hard work and contributions over the years. To celebrate our 75th year we would love to hear and share your memories of HLG. If you have been involved with the group and would like to get in touch please contacts us at the details below. IP
