E are CILIP! The eagle-eyed among you won’t have missed these words emblazoned across the cover of this month’s issue, but what do they mean and why are they there?

‘We are CILIP’ is the name of the new five-year

strategy and action plan for CILIP and our professional commu- nity. Developed in close consultation with our members, partners and stakeholders across all four Nations of the UK and overseas, it charts an ambitious new direction for your professional body over the next five years.

‘We are CILIP’ captures the spirit of an inclusive and impactful professional association, here for everyone who has a professional connection to libraries, information, knowledge and data and who shares our belief in their ability to change lives for the better. Our aim is to work with our members, Regional Member Net- works, Special Interest Groups, Devolved Nations and Diversity Networks to create a thriving and dynamic community of practice, fundamentally geared towards helping our members to succeed in their chosen profession. We want to empower our members across the whole profession to move from “information managers to infor- mation leaders”.

While writing this month’s introduction, I spoke with Charles Watson, husband of the librarian and academic Margaret Watson who sadly passed away just before Christmas. Margaret was a hugely significant figure in our world. Among her many achievements was to champion the more open and inclusive professional pathway which later became Certification – a signifi- cant contribution to lowering the ‘barrier to entry’ for our profes- sion.

Reflecting on Margaret’s work reminded me that we are indeed ‘all CILIP’ – the pioneers who came before us, the thousands of mem- bers we represent today and the generations of information pro- fessionals to come. I am incredibly proud to be part of continuing this legacy as we look ahead to the 125th anniversary of our Royal Charter in 2023. You can find a full run-down of the aims and priorities in the strategy and action plan later in this issue, along with an analysis of what it means for our community. I encourage you to take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with what it says and how you can get involved!
