Disability Network

Welcome to the network T

HE CILIP Disability Network launched in July 2021 to provide a forum for discussions about disabilities as

well as a platform for signposts to support LIS staff with both visible and invisible disabilities, which may be temporary or permanent, lifelong, or acquired.

LIS staff and CILIP members work hard every day, supporting end-users and colleagues navigate systems and resources and the Disability Network is in place to support LKS staff, whether they are CILIP members or not. This regular column will showcase what the network is doing and some of the things you can get involved with.

CILIP Disability Network What is it and why is a disability network needed?

l The Disability Network has been established to raise awareness of disability and provide information for LKS workers who have an interest in disability;

l It provides a platform for library, knowledge and information workers with experience of disability or who live with a condition.

What will we be doing? l Working with CILIP and other partners, the Network is here to support the advancement of disabled people in the workforce and the development of diverse library, knowledge and information services;

l It provides an authoritative voice on disability issues within the LIS community, with opportunities for its members with lived experience of disability to participate at events and within public discussions;

l The network provides a safe and inclusive space to ask questions, share information and network.

The committee The committee is led by the Co- January-February 2022

Chairs Morag Clarkson and Catherine McLaren. The committee has several other members including:

l Toni Velikova, who works as an Assistant Librarian at the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh. She is a committee member of the CILIP LGBTQ+ Network. If you are a member of the Disability Network, you may have heard from Toni as she looks after Member Communications;

l James Hughes, a Visitor Experience Officer at the British Library and Co- chair of the British Library Disability Support Network;

l Carol Smith is a Library Services and Knowledge Manager at Bedford Hospital, a member of the CILIP Community, Diversity and Equality Group, and is a diversity champion and union officer.

It would be great to have more people involved on the committee from across the United Kingdom. All meetings are virtual with roles for both members and non-members of CILIP. If you are interested contact us at info.disability@cilip.org.uk

l Freelance journalist and winner of the 2021 New Poets Prize, poet Karl Knights (@inadarkwood) read a selection of his poems.

l Learning Technologist, Simon Bowler (@BowlingForTech) spoke about creating accessible digital

l Trainer and advisor, Emma Shepherd talked about the disproportionate impact of Covid on disabled people both economically and socially.

l CEO for the Surrey Coalition of Disabled People, Clare Burgess spoke about how to tackle digital exclusion for the disabled community.

The event was recorded and will be available on our webpage at www.cilip. org.uk/disabilitynetwork.
