A Nightingale sang: knowledge mobilisation in action
Library and knowledge specialists were among the many NHS staff to use their expertise in the fight against the Covid pandemic. Here Sue Robertson, John Loy, Helen Alper, Steve Glover and Paul Twiddy reveal how knowledge and information services were mobilised in the early days of the pandemic to ensure additional support for staff drafted into the seven Nightingale Hospitals that were created across England.

Healthcare staff working in the Nightingale hospitals were drawn from a number of different organisations. This included healthcare staff from a number of different Trusts, staff returning to the workplace or recruited via an agency, staff from dental practices, vets, care homes, even airline cabin and ground crew.
This would be challenge enough in itself, but the obvious solution of extending NHS OpenAthens access to Nightingale staff quickly proved unworkable due to issues of authentication and access to such a varied and complex workforce. Alternative ways
