ILIP is currently working on its next five-year Strategic Plan, setting out how we will continue to unite, support and empower information professionals in all sectors in the years ahead.

In writing this strategy, I have been reflecting on the many ways in which our professional community has risen to the challenge of supporting information users through a global pandemic, social and political upheaval and digital transformation. Looking ahead, I would like to see our profession take a lead role in the social and economic development of all four nations of the UK, and indeed in meeting the challenge of the UN’s global Sustainable Development Goals.

Our profession has so much to offer to society, with a particular focus on social justice, standing up for intellectual freedom, making the case for evidence and addressing Climate Change. My senior CILIP colleagues and I, along with our Vice President Kate Robinson, are preparing to ‘hit the road’ for a series of meetings with CILIP members across the UK – our ‘Big Conversation’. I am looking forward to having an opportunity to re-connect, to hear from our members about your ambitions and priorities and to sharing some of the exciting work we’ve been doing to launch the new Profes- sional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) – our profession’s ‘Sector Skills Standard’.

CILIP’s Chief Development Officer, Jo Cornish, has worked with an advisory group of leading industry experts to create a PKSB that is both consistent with the past and absolutely future-ready. It retains the ethics of our profession at its core, and builds on these with a range of soft skills, management and leadership skills and digital competencies.

The new standard is supported by a completely new interface, making it easier for members to assess your strengths, track your progress and target areas for development. We’re hoping it will encourage more people to begin their journey towards being a Registered Professional.

I also wanted to share some good news. We recently reviewed CILIP’s membership statistics for 2021 and were delighted to find very significant increases in new members joining from public libraries and school libraries this year.

It is vitally important to us that we can represent the full breadth of our profession, so I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members and to say how pleased we are to have you as part of this fantastic CILIP community!
