THE IDDSI FRAMEWORK
The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) is a global framework that provides standardized terminology and definitions for serving texture-modified foods and thickened liquids. Developed by a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals, the framework consists of a continuum of eight levels (0-7), each with a unique number, name, color, and description.
IDDSI’s primary goal is to improve patient safety and communication for individuals with dysphagia, or swallowing difficulties, across all ages, care settings, and cultures. The framework is designed to be prescriptive rather than restrictive, offering a wider variety of safe food and drink options. It is internationally recognized, scientifically based, and endorsed by organizations like the NHS to reduce choking incidents.
