What to expect on the day Ceremony Suite Ground Floor


Please use the Pinstone Street entrance and arrive at least 10 minutes before the ceremony is due to begin.


The Registration Officers will first see you in private either together, or separately, to check and update the details provided when you gave notice, if you wish to be seen separately you should inform the attendant when you arrive. (Please note that the option to be seen separately is not available in the Loxley Room)


Sheffield Register Office


Please use the Norfolk Street entrance and arrive at least 10 minutes before the ceremony is due to begin.


The registrar will first take you both into the room together to check the details which are to appear in the marriage or civil partnership register.


You can only bring your 2 witnesses who must speak and understand English. They should be aged 16 years or over and may or may not be related to you.


Approved Premises


Civil Marriages and Civil Partnerships can take place in hotels, banqueting suites, stately homes and other venues in England and Wales which have been licensed accordingly.


You will still need to give your notice of marriage in the district or districts where you live. You will also need to contact the Register Office in the district where you are getting married, if this is different.

The registrars will arrive at the venue approximately 20 minutes before the ceremony is due to begin and will see you both, either together or separately, to check the details which are to appear in the marriage or civil partnership register.


Declare if there is any reason why you know your ceremony should not take place.


Say the necessary legal words that will join you as a couple.


Give and receive rings if this is your choice.


IIt is essential that two witnesses are present. They should be aged 16 years or over and may or may not be related to you.


Your ceremony must include the formal declaration and contracting words. However, you may also include vows of your own choice. You may also wish to include a reading or poem. Any vows, readings or poems must not contain any religious content or be from a religious ceremony.


Appropriate background music will be played however you may like to provide your own for the ceremony. You must ensure that the music you choose is of a non- religious nature. Music can be provided on either CD, ipod or iphone. We recommend 4 tracks.


The taking of photographs and/or a video recording is permitted. Photographs can also be taken in the Peace Gardens with its spectacular fountains or the Winter Gardens.


21 Celebrate in Sheffield


You are welcome to personalise your ceremony by writing your own personal words or by the addition of a reading or poem. However, it is not permitted to include anything of a religious nature.


You will need two witnesses who can speak and understand English. They may be relatives or friends.


You should liaise with your ceremony co-ordinator at the venue about the music you wish to have played and who will operate the music system. You must ensure that the music you choose is not religious.


The register office will send you something in writing around 4 weeks before your ceremony to ask for details to enable your registrar to prepare your ceremony.
