Proof that a previous marriage or civil partnership has ended

Decree Absolute of Divorce / Dissolution issued by a civil court in this country. If your paperwork was issued in another country please contact us.

Death certificate of former husband, wife or civil partner.

We must be able to link the documents to you. Please contact us for advice if you are not sure how to do this.

A Decree Nisi of Divorce is not acceptable. Change of name

If you have changed your name by deed poll or statutory declaration you may need to provide those documents. Please contact us if you do not have them.

Any documents not in English will need a certified translation. This can be done by a friend or family member. They must give us their contact details.

In some cases it will be necessary to have paperwork from abroad checked by our Head Office. This can result in delay.

If you are already married to each other but the marriage took place in another country and you are unsure about the validity of this marriage you should take legal advice from a solicitor specialising in marriage law. If you have already married each other in this country and are not sure if the marriage is valid under British law please contact us for advice.
