TAPA APAC REPORTS
THE ROLE OF SUPPLY CHAIN CONTROL TOWERS IN SECURITY
Covid-19 forced many manufacturers to slow production and delay shipments.
First among many, the healthcare industry came under public pressure to supply adequate quantities of PPE equipment for both patients and healthcare workers. For supply chain managers, the pandemic called into question longstanding practices, warehousing and technology processes as the disruption highlighted their vulnerabilities.
Industry Week has looked at how the use of Control Tower communication systems has enabled companies and their suppliers to make faster and more accurate decisions to manage these challenges.
A supply chain Control Tower offers companies the ability to gather and evaluate real-time

data throughout the end-to-end supply chain using cloud-based artificial intelligence. When properly implemented, they can greatly increase supply chain visibility and performance. Control Towers also support the automation of security compliance and enforcement of best practices from the outset of the data migration process, Industry Week reports.
Obviously, Control Towers are not a new concept. Once considered as a “nice to have” model, for some businesses they are now seen as a strategic differentiator for operational excellence, verifying credentials, screening of cargo, advance notifications, securing of cargo in transit or storage, surveillance and inspecting shipments at each stage of the supply chain process. In today’s world of rapid digitalization and AI-ML driven dashboards, only the physical aspects of supply chains like manufacturing and warehousing should be at sites.
Other than this, if a company has invested in the right technology and strategic partners, designed an organization with the right competencies, and set up the right communication and collaboration tools, Control Towers will be game changing. This is especially true for areas like logistics, procurement, demand and supply planning, customer order fulfilments, and security.
In supply chain security operations, the importance of Control Towers will gain ground, the report forecasts. The goal of supply chain security is to manage risk by layered defences. This requires a multi-faceted approach to protecting checkpoints, assets and infrastructure involved in the supply chain. Hence, even though supply chain Control Towers have come a long way since they were first proposed in the 1990s, the most significant item to now consider is the focus on the supply chain Control Tower itself.
