FEATURED INTERVIEW ‘Our People Matter’, says Christine Martin

Travel Retail Training (TRTUK) has built an enviable reputation for its successful training initiatives and events for the industry’s ‘frontline heroes’ over the past 23 years; something which it hopes to reinforce further with its new event in December. Charlotte Turner reports.

deserve to win an award.” It is no secret that many in the

industry believe that there are now too many trade conferences and events in the packed DF&TR calendar. With this in mind, TRBusiness asked Martin why the industry needs another one. “I think the time could never be

more right than now for a conference such as ‘Our People Matter’. Organic growth, after so much consolidation, I know is a top priority for many organisations. “I hope that people will share best

hilst TRTUK has focused on the inflight industry primarily for much of

the last two decades, the company’s Managing Director, Christine Martin tells TRBusiness that the company is spreading its wings, with a new event which will take place at the end of this year. The ‘Our People Matter’

conference, which will be held at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel at London Heathrow on 6 and 7 December, focuses on the issues that affect the performance of those actually working in duty free and travel retail environments across all channels (i.e airlines, airports, ferries & cruise etc) and product categories. “I think we have over the past 23

years built a very strong reputation for giving our industry heroes the recognition they deserve and so seldom get,” says Martin. “Having previously focused

on inflight retail and cabin crew, we are now spreading the good news by including airports, cruise ships, airport staffing agencies as well as airlines.” The new event is firstly a

conference for those ‘who are interested in driving organic growth by maximising their people potential’, says Martin. Secondly, it recognises and rewards the industry’s heroes, which Martin says are the ‘life blood of our industry’.

Now is the time... Whilst the conference is taking place those ‘heroes’ that have been short-listed for an award will enjoy a different programme of events for which Martin cannot reveal too much at present. She can however tell TRBusiness that there won’t be any assessments taking place this year. “I am sure that all of our heroes

out there will be delighted to know that there won’t be any assessments at ‘Our People Matter’, as their employers have already provided us with information detailing why they

practice and be open to learning from each other so we can all work smarter, not harder. “I want our delegates to leave

thinking they contributed and benefitted by attending and of course to play a part in making our heroes feel valued, so they can in turn add value. That is really important to me.” The inaugural programme covers

many aspects of maximising people potential, says Martin. “If you are in charge of recruitment

then you would be very interested in the first session ‘Recruiting and retaining talent’. If your job involves training then we have sessions on ‘engagement & education’.” “We will also be exploring how

standards can kick-start that organic growth process, so if ‘performance management’ is what your job role relates to, then this session will be of special relevance.” Audience participation is

encouraged during the conference, especially during the last session ‘Digitalisation versus Humanisation’, which will be led by The Blueprint Partnership and Mind Set. «
