WINE & SPIRITS: CHAMPAGNE LANSON

Exclusive cuvées hint at Champagne Lanson’s scaled-up travel retail ambitions

In a year marking its 260th anniversary, Maison de Champagne Lanson has reinvented its range around 10 cuvées. Luke Barras-Hill discovers why this will resonate for duty free buyers and travellers.

F

ew would argue that 2020 has been horrendous for the majority of stakeholders in

global travel retail. Coronavirus (Covid-19) has dealt

knock-out blows to air transport and maritime channels so critical to the sustenance

and

growth of DF&TR, and while the recovery is underway it remains uncertain when traveller volumes will restore

to

comfortable levels. Indeed,

it

is also terribly ironic that 2020 marks Maison Lanson’s 260th anniversary. Rather than rest on its laurels, the

Reims-based champagne house has been working hard to reconfigure its assortments that celebrate core values of kindness, humility,

authenticity, openness and elegance. The result is an adjusted range

boasting revamped packaging and communications. Effective from 1 July, the new Lanson product offering comprises ten cuvées across three segments. The core range

features five champagnes: Le Black Label Brut, Le Rosé, Le White Label Sec, Le Black Reserve and Le Blanc de Blancs. Three Rare

& Exceptional champagnes include Green Label, Vintage 2009

and Le Clos Lanson. Completing the lineup are two

Cuvée de Prestige 100% grand crus: La Noble Cuvée Brut 2002 and La Noble Cuvée Blanc de Blancs 2002. Underpinning the lines are new

packaging designs that emphasise the history and identity of the maison.

A symbol of kindness... The Lanson Cross, inspired by the Maltese Cross, can be traced to 1798 when the founder’s son took on the emblem – a symbol of kindness. An insignia of the Royal Warrant,

awarded to Lanson by Queen Victoria in 1900, is emblazoned across the bottlings. On the reverse, customers will

find labels offering more detailed information than previously on blends, dosage, the harvest base, reserve wines, the date of disgorging

Le Black Réserve and Le Blanc de Blancs, exclusive to global duty free and travel retail, premium wine retailers and on-premise channels, will showcase first with Lagardère Travel Retail at Paris’ airports (Charles de Gaulle and Orly) in October.
