Industry’s resilience being ‘tested’ as governments struggle to align on policy
As explored in last month’s leader, the topic of quarantine measures became a key talking point at ASUTIL’s ‘Proactive Steps II’ webinar, with Rafael Echevarne Director General ACI- LAC and other speakers agreeing that such measures were ‘killing the business’ in LatAm. The sentiment is certainly shared by other
parts of the world, namely Europe, where The European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC)
has joined more than 20 travel and tourism bodies and unions calling on the EU Commission to replace quarantine restrictions with an EU Testing Protocol for Travel (p6). However, while this is indeed logical in theory, the question must
be asked: do European countries have adequate testing capacity? In the case of the UK, the ‘world-beating coronavirus test, track and trace system’ that was promised has certainly not delivered to vast swathes of the country, where in some cases citizens have not been able to obtain any tests at all or have been forced to wait long periods before receiving them, Still, the ETRC is right to point out that the ‘re-opening of borders
and the re-establishment of the free movement of people in Europe is a prerequisite for the recovery of our industry’.
TRBusiness ranks Top 10 international operators As it stands now, a full recovery in international passenger traffic akin to 2019 levels is not anticipated before 2024. This is something agreed upon by the majority of the world’s leading duty free and travel retailers interviewed for the indispensable Top 10 International Operators report [bound with this issue of TRBusiness]. As is customary, the Top 10 Report ranks operators using sales
figures registered in the prior year (in this case the 2019 calendar year). The majority of the companies in the ranking posted solid performances. This can certainly be said of the reigning GTR operator Dufry
Group, which was able to compensate for a challenging trading environment in Latin America last year with notable sales rises in Europe (particularly the UK and Spain), Africa and Asia, with total turnover growing by 1.9% to reach CHF8,848.6 million/$8.9bn. However, the fastest growing retailers in this year’s table were,
once again, those based in Asia. Korea’s Lotte and Shilla in addition to China’s CDFG all enjoyed mid to high double-digit growth in 2019. It appears that China’s domestic recovery in H2 2020 may see China’s leading travel retailer soar up the rankings in next year’s Top 10 report. In fact, CDFG is the only operator to report gains during the pandemic and President Charles Chen tells TRBusiness (p19) he is confident that sales made from CDFG’s downtown Hainan island business will double by year-end. The Top 10 table and full analysis of each operator’s performance can be found
in this year’s Top 10 International Operators Report, bound with this issue. Charlotte Turner, Editorial Director
OCTOBER 2020
TRMarketplace: Industry’s first digital forum begins
TRBusiness and Bluedog Productions are delighted to welcome all fully registered delegates to the industry’s first digital conference and networking forum, TRMarketplace, (28 September – 2 October). While DF&TR battles an unprecedented crisis initiated by the
global coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, TRBusiness and Bluedog Productions have designed a user-friendly, intuitive, and accessible- to-all digital platform, which will genuinely support the industry to not only ‘adapt & survive’, but continue to thrive in the future. Since the platform first opened for pre-event access on 28 August,
attendees have been busy making new connections, chatting and hosting meetings. On 28 September, the forum kicks off its comprehensive daily
e-learning programme with an impressive welcome webinar session (09.00 UK time) featuring Ramesh Cidambi, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Duty Free who provides the keynote address. He will be joined by Tanja Dik, Director of Consumer Products & Services at Schiphol Airport and Simon Kemp, Founder of Kepios & Chief Analyst at DataReportal. The remaining webinars will commence with a brief consumer
insights overview by research partner m1nd-set. One of the members of the management team – Peter Mohn, Clara Susset, Anna Marchesini and Camila Estrada – will each present up-to-the- minute shopper insights from research undertaken in recent weeks. The insights will reveal intended shopper behaviours among
a global panel of consumers for each category, market or retail channel when international travel resumes, so remember to add sessions to your calendar now. In addition, the webinar programme will feature the postponed 2020 Travel Retail Awards ceremony. The industry’s only consumer-voted awards will feature exclusive and unique insights from m1nd-set. The awards ceremony (11am UK time) will include a series of brief
consumer insight summaries for each award to explain the consumer feedback on the category and the criteria that defined each winner. To find out more about TRMarketplace, the webinar programme or
the 2020 Travel Retail Awards, see our dedicated website: www.
