Gebr. Heinemann to operate nine stores at new Berlin Brandenburg Airport
Gebr. Heinemann is to operate nine stores across 5,400sq m in the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER), which finally opened on 31 October following a series of setbacks. As of the end of October, six stores
were already trading in T1 covering around 3,000sq m. These include a 1,660sq m walkthrough Heinemann Duty Free & Travel Value shop in the Schengen Area. The design of the stores is a particular
highlight; Heinemann Duty Free is implementing its ‘Local Sense’ concept with products and influences from the region. This is courtesy of Berlin architecture firm Graft. According to Heinemann, the fashion,
art and design metropolis served as inspiration. Furniture in the main store, for example, is reminiscent of the Berlin wall. Popular products such as Berlin Gin
‘Brandstifter’ and Spreewald gherkins complete the sense of Berliner Luft (Berlin Air) at the airport.
Heathrow in legal action over UK tax free scrappage
London Heathrow Airport is priming a legal challenge against the government’s decision to abolish airside tax free sales and the VAT Retail Export (VAT RES) scheme, TRBusiness can confirm. Travel retail juggernaut Dufry and tax
refund specialist Global Blue are also backing the plans for a judicial review. Rising opposition surfacing on 2
November came just days after TRBusiness launched its own consumer-facing petition urging ministers to re-think a ‘hammer blow’ to the UK’s economy that could result in thousands of job losses and cost the Treasury billions of pounds in lost tax revenue and tourist spending [see p3].
