Environmental Geoscience


This interdisciplinary degree will allow you to explore topics such as climate change, volcanic hazards and resource management, leading to a wide range of exciting and important careers.


Why study Environmental Geoscience at Bristol? Environmental geoscientists examine the interactions between the geology, biology, chemistry and physics of Earth’s surface, oceans and atmosphere. Bristol is a UK hub for environmental geoscience and our school has expertise across this broad field, including climate change, marine science, geochemistry, geophysics and volcanic hazards. We encourage you to get actively involved in our scientific community from the outset.


Our courses are rigorously quantitative and focus on problem solving. Our reputation for international collaboration lets us share the latest thinking from geoscientists across the world. Course content is guided by an industrial advisory board; this ensures that the skills you gain during your studies will be valued by industry when you graduate.


We have a tightly knit community and a programme of student-run projects, informal seminars and social events. Our courses include field trips in the UK and overseas, the cost of which is included in your tuition fee.


Our degrees are accredited by the Geological Society of London and are flexible enough to allow transfers between some courses at the end of the first year.

This degree gives you a deep understanding of Earth’s environment and how it can be influenced by human activities.


In years one and two you gain a firm grounding in earth sciences, building your knowledge to inform your choice of third year options, which have recently included Oceanography, Economic Geology, and Climates and Ecosystems. Your third year also includes an independent field and laboratory project and an industry-standard environmental impact study.


Our close links with industry ensure that the skills you gain during your studies are valued by employers. Recent partners include Shell, Chevron, Reykjavik Energy, Atkins, Environmental Resources Management and EDF.


You will be invited on a field trip just before your first term starts, so you can get to know your year group before lectures begin.

Years one, two and four mirror the MSci Environmental Geoscience degree but you will spend your third year abroad studying in English at one of our partner institutions. Students on this degree return with an appreciation of different cultures, exciting new ideas and a broader perspective of the world, all of which can lead to enhanced career prospects. Recently, students have been to North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
