FURTHER INFORMATION OUR COURSES
Our courses
Our undergraduate degree courses are either Single Honours or Joint Honours, which allow you to study two subjects alongside one another.
Social sciences and arts courses (except for modern languages) generally take three years to complete and lead to a bachelor’s (BA, BSc or LLB) degree. Most science and engineering courses, and some medical science courses, offer a choice of three-year bachelor’s or four-year integrated master’s (MEng, MSci) degree. If you are unsure which course to apply for, we recommend applying for the master’s course in order to secure four years of financial support, since funding bodies may refuse a subsequent extension of study. Dentistry, medicine and veterinary science courses usually take five years to complete.
Courses with Study in Industry A number of our science, medical science and engineering courses include a year of industrial experience. The first two years of these courses are normally the same as the corresponding Honours degree courses. The third year is spent gaining valuable experience in industry, before returning to Bristol for your fourth and final year.
Courses with time spent abroad Many of our courses offer you the opportunity to study or work abroad, which can broaden your experience of university education and enhance your CV. Our degrees with ‘Study Abroad’ or ‘Study in Continental Europe’ in the title offer a year of study at one of our partner institutions overseas.
Courses with Innovation or Quantitative Research Methods On these degree courses, two thirds of your studies will follow the corresponding Single Honours degree, focusing on the core knowledge in your subject. The remaining third of your course provides additional experience in innovation or training in quantitative methods, offering invaluable skill sets for your future career. See p104 and p132 respectively for details.
BSc with a preliminary year of study We offer degrees in Chemistry and in Physics with a preliminary year of study. These four-year courses are suitable for applicants who wish to study science but need to improve their level of attainment in the sciences.
Intercalation We support our students who want to enhance their medicine, dentistry or veterinary science degrees by intercalating, and we welcome students from other universities who are looking to intercalate at Bristol. For more information and a list of available courses please visit
bristol.ac.uk/intercalate.
Part-time courses
A part-time course is ideal if you need to balance studying for a degree with other commitments. We offer BA English Literature and Community Engagement (p90) and Foundation in Arts and Humanities (CertHE) (p59) as part-time courses. Several of our full- time degrees may also be studied part-time; if this option is available, it will be indicated within the course entry in this guide.
Student agreement
The University values its students and works to provide the support structures and opportunities that will enable you to excel in every aspect of your life and make your time at Bristol a genuinely transformative experience. To help create a positive environment for learning and academic achievement, the University has established various rules and regulations that all students must follow if they accept an offer of a place to study with us. These rules and regulations include a Student Agreement, which sets out the relationship between the University of Bristol and its students. Copies of the current versions of the agreement and other policies are available at
