Embracing Hope As The New Year Begins

I hope that by the time you’re reading this you’ve had some kind of holiday break, even a day or two to put down the great responsibility senior living professionals live with, and be together, or be thankful, or simply be. As I write this, in December, we’re seeing planning powering forward as a vaccine rollout gets closer every day. It won’t all be over at the first vaccination, not by a long shot—but it’s good to open the door to hope again. Managing critical COVID-19-related duties on top of the

day-to-day that can already fill more than a day was hard enough. The second wave is taking a toll. It could start to feel like you’re waiting for that break that never comes.

None of us is alone in this: Take a look at some of the results of OnShift’s

Workforce 360 Survey, on page 47 in CEO Mark Woodka’s regular column. It asked more than 2,100 senior living professionals for their perspectives on workforce challenges and the impacts of COVID-19. “Unfortunately, 54 percent report difficulties managing this fear and anxiety, which has led to burnout, which a whopping 80 percent of providers report,” he writes. That means it’s time to bring out the strong stuff: everything you know about stress-busters, self-care, coping mechanisms, mindfulness, relaxation techniques— whatever it takes to stay healthy in this very tough new territory.

An inspiration break Paging through the winners of the Senior Living by Design annual competition (p.9) is like a mini getaway. The creativity and comfort the five winners and honorable mention display is a breath of fresh air.

Memory care is always an inspiration—the caregivers and educators in the field are not only able to find hope and joy within stressful situations, but to communicate it: See articles on about person-centered care (p.30), the Montessori approach (p.46), and countering the effects of social isolation (p.42). At this year’s Senior Living Executive Virtual Conference, held online, more than half the attendees were first-timers—and none were shy about asking questions and getting into discussions. Catch up with a few of the takeaways on page 38.
