SAN SERENO

BY AURIA SENIOR LIVING Johannesburg, South Africa Provider: Auria Senior Living Architect: Kunz Raubenheimer Architects Interior Design: Metaphor Design

A great residence design can improve the

lives of people living there. An extraordi- nary design can do even more, improving lives through its influence and innovation. South Africa is experiencing an awaken-

ing to what senior living at its best can be, and Auria Senior Living has sought to be one of the leaders in this. The San Sereno community, with its bright, modern, and comfortable design, exemplifies this global trend. The continuing care retirement commu-

nity, built on a 32-acre site in Johannesburg in the 1980s, was ready to be recreated and repositioned. The vision was to establish a new gold standard for senior living design— and the judges agree that it succeeds.

10 SENIOR LIVING EXECUTIVE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

“The impact of this project will be felt far

beyond its boundaries, as it ushers in a new typology for senior living in South Africa,” said Senior Living by Design judge Cynthia Shonaiya, principal at Hord Coplan Macht. The extensive renovation, begun in 2017,

resulted in a luxurious and enticing living environment, offering a variety of ameni- ties while accommodating different resident mobilities: a café/bistro, formal restaurant, lounge, salon, indoor swimming pool, cin- ema, yoga/Pilates studio, and gym. A new wing capitalizes on the views overlooking the lawn-bowling green. A new card room, billiard room, library, gym, wellness center, and concierge area was created by reconfig- uring the original layout.
