The impetus to respect and to celebrate


the traditions and cultures of neighbor- hoods has driven some of the most creative urban architecture and design. St. Rita Square is one such innovative community. In creating the new 118-resident senior living community, Capri Senior Communi- ties and the architects integrated a neigh- borhood landmark Catholic church, pre- serving a heritage and continuing to serve the neighborhood in an active and ongoing way.


“This client and project have such a rich


history that heavily influenced every aspect of the design and decision-making,” said Eric Harrmann, chief design officer at AG Architecture.

church such as stained glass, stonework, and a signature rose window were recovered, re- stored, and incorporated into the exterior and interior design. New construction and design as well echo


the church and the vibrant Italian culture of the neighborhood. For instance, St. Rita is associated with the symbol of a yellow rose, which provided inspiration for interior design details such as floral fabrics, artwork, and gold elements. “This urban infill project oozes authen-


ticity and local community connections,” said Senior Living by Design judge Chris Hollister, president at Pegasus Senior Living. Although St. Rita Square is situated on a spare 1.1-acre urban site, its contemporary
