FOR THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
EDLI Offers Support and Information
Vital For Leadership Here and Now By Sara Wildberger
T
he number of executive directors stepping up and showing leader- ship may be greater than ever be-
fore—and they deserve support. Argentum’s Executive Director Leadership Institute is an annual intensive created specifically to do just that. EDLI helps executive directors develop
their skills in mission critical areas such as operations management, leadership, human resources, sales and marketing, clinical over- sight, risk management, and more. Long- time leaders and new executive directors alike attend EDLI to learn new strategies and to network. This year, EDLI was offered virtually over
five days, with the potential to earn up to 12.5 CEUs. Speakers included experts from multiple fields affecting senior living, includ- ing clinical medicine, risk management, workforce, therapy, investment, and sales. Keynote sessions were led by Christo-
pher Ridenhour, who provides “strategic leadership, coaching, and training to staff in an organization defined by a Culture of Considerate Behaviors. The goal is for every single team member to feel valued, appre- ciated, and expertly equipped to provide exemplary services in a highly stressed and regulated industry.” Here are a few of the actionable take-
aways shared: Christopher Ridenhour, keynoter, director of workplace culture and trainer: Race, Class, Culture and Creating Real Teamwork in Aging Services “You have the ability to say: not in my
house, not on my watch. To have everyone be crystal clear about what is acceptable, and what is not. There is a lot of power and influence that you and I can have, be- cause we are the keepers of the culture. I
don’t want you to ever get less brave around having conversations around inclusion. Because even if we stumble over race and don’t know a lot about what gender iden- tity means or sexual preference, or if it’s difficult to talk about these things, I want you to lean heavily on the mission/vision/ values. Because that is how folks feel a sense of belonging—when everyone across every shift feels valued and appreciated, then ev- erybody is covered.” Jenn Ruoff, MS, OTR/L, director of occupa- tional therapy services, FOX Rehabilitation: Resident Engagement and Socialization “This is where I start with my approach
with education to family members as well as to senior living community staff: Our jobs are not to do things for people; our job is to give people tools and strategies and resourc- es for them to be able to do it better. We saw so much more profoundly during COVID that once people stop doing things for them- selves, they decrease in motivation, they’re more depressed, they are more isolated.” JoAnne Carlin, MSN, RN, NHA, CDAL, vice president clinical risk services, Willis Towers Watson: Covering Your Assets: Practical Risk Management Strategies “Think through having a social media
policy, procedure, and best practices. We’re in the day and age where you really need to address this head on. Don’t take for granted that employees have their own understand- ing of what they can or can’t do—everyone is using a phone, so we need to be clear about the kinds of things we can take pic- tures of and can’t.” Tana Gall, president, Merrill Gardens: Balanc- ing Mission and Margin “Be bold, be honest, and get paid for the
care being provided. It’s an easy thing to get behind, to give a concession here and there

on care. But our CNAs, our nurses, our med techs are worth their weight in gold…Know everything going on in your business: How many apartments are empty? Do you have a unit type that’s not moving quite as fast as another one? And that goes into knowing your competition. What are the other folks in your market doing?”
TESTIMONIALS
“In the past, I attended EDLI in person, and this year, virtually. No matter the format and your years of experience as an executive director/ general manager, you always learn something new. Presenters are very knowledgeable and you can benefit from their experience, regardless of the type of community you are running.”

“As a resident director less than a year, this training was extremely beneficial. I get the benefit of hearing others say ‘I wish I would have known this back then!’
