Urban luxury defines Brandywine Living at Alexandria, a senior living community in the heart of the city’s dynamic West End, which is undergoing significant redevelopment. The 116-residence community is part of Cameron Park, a 7.8-acre mixed-use development that features upscale townhomes, luxury apart- ments, and ground floor retail space. A pe- destrian bridge will connect the whole devel- opment to a nearby metro station, as well. Brandywine Living at Alexandria was de-


scribed by Senior Living by Design judge Lore Brownson, senior vice president and chief compliance officer at New Perspective Senior Living, as “a beautiful and functional design in an urban setting.” The City of Alexandria is an urban suburb situated across the Potomac River


and just south of Washington, D.C. The growing area is home to working profes- sionals with aging parents and to a signifi- cant older population of executives and administrators. “We felt the community would appreciate a property like ours,” said Brenda Bacon, president and CEO at Brandywine Living. The challenge was to fit Brandywine’s


design approach into a small one-acre ur- ban site. Brandywine Living typically builds two- or three-story communities spread over several acres to create an estate-like setting. Brandywine Living at Alexandria is the company’s first urban design. The six-story project includes ground floor retail space and offers the same high amenity service package and space as its less urban coun-
