2018 SENIOR LIVING BY DESIGN NOMINEES
1. Allegro, Winter Park, Fla., Bessolo Design Group. The 174,000-square-foot community set on 17 acres along the shore of Lake Ann combines beauty and functional- ity. Synonymous with Allegro's brand of design, the com- munity allows residents to age in place. Each housing entity has its own dedicated entrance with an impressive center atrium.
2. Anchor Health & Rehab., Aiken, S.C., McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture. The extensively landscaped therapy courtyard has passive recreational areas, with a port, trellises, and a water feature, as well as active spaces for treatment including walking paths with bridges and a putting green. The new dining room features an open serving kitchen designed to be more homelike.
3. Arbor Terrace Mountainside, Mountainside, N.J., Meyer Senior Living Studio. The visitor enters the community under a grand canopy, supported by two large grace- ful brackets, and then enters into an elegant, two-story lobby with a monumental staircase. The “wow” space is the Whiskey Tavern, an old-world-style bar with large open tray ceilings and heavy wood timber trusses.
4. Atria Norwood, Norwood, N.J., Meyer Senior Living Stu- dio. The community’s most notable feature is the lobby with its impressive high ceiling and signature staircase, helping visitors feel invited and special from the moment they walk inside. The community keeps function and aesthetics in mind as residents travel throughout the building.
5. Brightview Great Falls, Great Falls, Va., Architecture Incorporated. Sustainable design features include best management practices such as onsite storm water struc- tures. The building was purposely oriented on the site and lawn areas minimized to preserve as much of the existing tree canopy as possible, including two large rare white oaks at the entrance of the property.
6. Commonwealth Senior Living at Stratford House, Dan- ville, Va., Direct Supply Aptura. An existing senior living community that included a historic building was renovat- ed and completely updated. A memory care neighbor- hood was added and the historic details of the property were maintained using historic tax credits.
7. HarborChase of Park Cities, Dallas, Texas, BOKA Pow- ell. Unlike many senior living communities in sprawl- ing suburban locations, HarborChase of Park Cities is uniquely situated in an urban setting. Biophilic design was an important part of the overall design plan and was achieved through the use of light and creation of outdoor terrace space with little actual acreage utilized.
8. Heritage Green, Greensboro, N.C., Laura Redd Interiors. The theme of the reimagined lobby and activity space is a modern lodge with colors and fabrics that are warm and inviting, comfortable and durable. The furniture styles are familiar to the residents but are modern so the community feels fresh and current.
9. Housing Authority of Charleston Williams Terrace, Charleston, S.C., McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture. The affordable senior housing development includes 41 living residences, ground floor parking, a ground level screened porch, and a conditioned rooftop community room with an adjacent public roof terrace.
10. Province Springs, Colorado Springs, Colo., LRS Archi- tects. A strong emphasis was given toward providing ample outdoor amenities. The grounds are complete with a dog park, pavilion and BBQs, putting green and indoor, heated saltwater pool with adjacent patio and sensory garden, and continuous walking paths with sit- ting areas.
