Designing Communities for a More Enriched Experience
Steve Jobs, cofounder and former CEO of Apple Inc., said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” Designing senior living communities is not about selecting paint colors and choosing new furniture; it’s about the critical need for improved form and function. How can design improve resident lifestyle, staff effi ciency, or family engagement? What does it take to provide a more enriching experience for everyone who touches a community? In this issue of Senior Living Executive, the Design
Issue, we introduce the 2018 Argentum Senior Living by Design Award winners— Brandywine Living at Alexandria, Creekside Senior Living, Crestavilla, Evergreen Village at Bloomington, and Meadow Active Lifestyle Community—that raise the bar in functional design (p.6). These communities showcase the latest innovations in senior living design and architecture, such as introducing more fl exible and effi cient spaces, eff ective community integration in urban settings, and special considerations for topographical challenges and cultural context. Don’t miss a rich visual display featuring these winners at the 2019 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference, April 15-17, in San Antonio, Texas (p.29). Also in this issue, you’ll read about how to best integrate voice-activated technology across senior living communities, from benefi ts to challenges to logistics (p.30). As more communities pilot programs, build smart residences, and implement tech solutions, industry leaders continue to learn what works best for their residents, staff , and families. You’ll also learn about programming designed to promote both a healthy body and mind (p.46), how to complement design innovation with exceptional service and hospitality (p.49), and why one community allows residents to design their own environment with personalized artwork (p.48). We thank you for your continued readership and wish you a wonderful start to the new year!
